The Lovingkindness Of God

A wonderful attribute of God

Our marvellous God has many amazing attributes which reflect how great and awesome He is. One attribute that we should greatly appreciate is the lovingkindness of God. He displayed His lovingkindness to the people of Israel and individuals such as David. David highlighted this attribute, especially in Psalm 36. Let us carefully consider and deeply appreciate the lovingkindness of God.

Understanding the lovingkindness of God

1. The word “lovingkindness” is made up of two words.
   1. Love
   2. Kindness
   3. God’s love is expressed in His kindness towards men.
2. It is closely associated with the other attributes of God.
   1. One such attribute is the mercies of God.
   2. David prayed with the association of God’s lovingkindness and mercies in mind.“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.” (Psalm 51:1)
   3. He depended on the lovingkindness and mercies of God when seeking His forgiveness.

The preciousness of the lovingkindness of God

“How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!” (Psalm 36:7)

1. David described the lovingkindness of God as most precious to him.
2. This is demonstrated by how His lovingkindness is expressed.
   1. God’s lovingkindness is expressed in His protection (Psalm 36:7).
      • A mother bird would diligently protect her young under the shadow of her wings.
      • This illustrates the way God would lovingly protect the children of men from all difficulties.
   2. His lovingkindness is also expressed in the giving of an abundance of satisfaction (Psalm 36:8).
      • The Lord provides His house with fulness of blessings.
      • Out of His fulness, God would give His bountiful lovingkindness to satisfy His people.
   3. It is also expressed in the Lord being a great source of life and light (Psalm 36:9).
      • He lovingly gives life and light to overcome life’s afflictions and the darkness of the world.
      • There is much joy and uplift to the heart in experiencing the lovingkindness of God.

A prayer for God’s lovingkindness to continue

“Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You,” (Psalm 36:10)

1. David prayed for the continued outpouring of God’s lovingkindness.
2. When enemies hated David, he prayed for God’s lovingkindness to fill his heart.
3. Let us be challenged to pray for God’s lovingkindness to fill our hearts.
4. His lovingkindness would continue to strengthen our spirit to rise above our difficulties.

Treasuring the lovingkindness of God

1. As God’s lovingkindness is so profound and glorious, let us meditate on it.
2. There is so much for us to fathom about the lovingkindness of God.
3. As it is so rich and wonderful, let us seek to treasure it dearly and greatly.
4. Let us place our complete trust in the lovingkindness of the Lord as we face the adverse challenges of life.
