The concept of a path
Whether we travel to work or return home, we would decide on a certain path or route. The tendency is to choose the fastest route with the least delays. That route would be the wise and right path to travel on.
Life can be seen as a path that we walk on. It matters whether we have taken the right path in life, as there will be consequences if we do not. The writer of Proverbs sought to highlight the importance of walking on the path of wisdom. How should we understand this path of wisdom?
Following the path of wisdom
“I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths.” (Proverbs 4:11)
- We thank God for those (pastors, teachers, parents and others) who teach us the way of wisdom.
- The instructions we have received provide us with knowledge and understanding.
- They give us the wisdom to know the way that we ought to take and travel on.
- These wise teachers would also lead us on the right paths.
- They walk on these wise paths and we learn to follow their lead.
- What are the results of travelling on these paths (Proverbs 4:12)?
- When we walk on these paths, our steps will not be hindered.
- When we run, we will not stumble.
- Let us be challenged to follow the path of wisdom.
Guard against the path of the wicked
“Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil.” (Proverbs 4:14)
- Instructions would also reveal what is the path of the wicked.
- It is a path filled with evil, sin, greed, harm and more.
- It is a path that will lead to deception and destruction.
- The challenge is given to avoid this path at all cost (Proverbs 4:15).
- Solomon gave a strong prohibition not to travel on it (Proverbs 4:15).
- It would be wise to turn away from this path of wickedness (Proverbs 4:15).
- Let us be challenged to guard ourselves from going the way of evil (Proverbs 4:14–15).
Choosing and staying on the path of wisdom
“Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; keep her, for she is your life.” (Proverbs 4:13).
- At the crossroads of life, we have to choose the path we would like to take.
- The choice between the path of wisdom and the path of the wicked is obvious.
- We definitely ought to choose the path of wisdom.
- But how can we ensure that we stay on the path of wisdom?
- Take firm hold of instruction…when we receive it, to keep it close to our hearts and minds.
- Never let go…not to allow the instruction to slip away.
- Keep following…to diligently and fervently keep the instructions.
- These instructions would continue to give us a life of blessing and goodness.
Let us be challenged to choose carefully the path we want to walk. If we choose the path of wisdom, we will not be hindered or stumbled in our walk. If we choose the path of wickedness, it will bring about shame and destruction. Let us be challenged to choose discerningly the path of wisdom and righteousness.
