The challenge of seeking for wisdom
The author of Proverbs challenges us to make it our quest to seek for wisdom. A quest takes time and necessary steps for us to acquire wisdom. Often, our efforts are half-hearted, weak and less than desirable. In understanding this quest, Solomon used conditional sentences, a series of “ifs” (protasis) to indicate the conditions that are to be met first and only “then” (apodosis) will true wisdom be found. These are features that help us to know what must be done if we really are pursuing wisdom sincerely.
The features in our search for wisdom
1. Receive…“My son, if you receive my words,” (Proverbs 2:1)
- Words of wisdom are taught to us.
- We ought to learn to receive these words with interest and keenness.
2. Treasure…“And treasure my commands within you,” (Proverbs 2:1)
- These words of wisdom are to be regarded as precious and prized.
- They are to be cherished and held dear as treasure.
3. Incline your ear…“So that you incline your ear to wisdom,” (Proverbs 2:2)
- If we treasure wisdom, we will listen well to the wisdom that is taught.
- The ear is attentive and careful to learn humbly from the voice of wisdom.
4. Apply your heart…“And apply your heart to understanding;” (Proverbs 2:2)
- The whole heart is also involved and applied in learning and comprehending wisdom.
- More significant insights and understanding will be gained.
5. Cry out for discernment…“Yes, if you cry out for discernment,” (Proverbs 2:3)
- This is a literal cry out for discernment.
- It is to make an earnest plea for good wisdom and judgment to be given.
6. Lift your voice for understanding…“And lift up your voice for understanding,” (Proverbs 2:3)
- Every effort is made to entreat for a greater depth of understanding.
- With much sincerity and urgency, we lift our voice to call for wisdom.
7. Seek wisdom as silver…“If you seek her as silver,” (Proverbs 2:4)
- There is a more intense search for wisdom.
- We are to search for wisdom as we would in a treasure hunt for silver.
8. Search as for hidden treasure…“And search for her as for hidden treasures;” (Proverbs 2:4)
- Wisdom is to be seen as a hidden treasure that is most valuable and costly.
- She is of great worth, and we should do everything we can to diligently and zealously search for her as a treasure hunter would in seeking his treasure.
The fear of the Lord
“Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:5)
Through this quest for wisdom, we hope to find a deeper understanding of God. There would come a greater reverence and regard for Him. Our knowledge of God would grow and help us in the development of our faith. We can discover how wise and discerning our God is. Let us be challenged to make it our quest to sincerely and diligently seek for the wisdom of God.
