Determining the right perspective of life
In His insightful Sermon on the Mount, the Lord Jesus taught many precious and fundamental truths. One of the vital lessons He wisely taught was how we should see and perceive things. Our perspective of life will affect whether we live righteously or not.
The eye of the body
- How do we determine the right perspective of life? The key is the eye of the body.
- The Lord Jesus taught, “The lamp of the body is the eye.” (Matthew 6:22)
- The eye affects our perspective of life, which determines what is good or bad.
- The lamp shines forth its light so that we can perceive as we ought to.
- Without the lamp shining, our eyes and perspective will be adversely affected.
When we are enlightened
“If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.” (Matthew 6:22)
- When enlightened, we will have the right perspective of life.
- There will be wisdom, understanding and clarity of what is the enlightened way of living.
- We will have a life full of light…a righteous, holy and blessed life.
When we have darkness
“But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.” (Matthew 6:23)
- When we have a bad eye and there is darkness, our perspective of life will be wrong.
- With no light, there will come foolishness, misunderstanding and corruption.
- Our life will be full of darkness…an unrighteous, unholy and evil life.
A far worse situation
“If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness.” (Matthew 6:23)
- The Lord saw a more profound problem: when our light is actually deemed as darkness.
- This is a deeper form of darkness…where we think we have light, but it is darkness.
- An example is hypocrisy. On the one hand, we speak of living righteously before others but on the other hand, when no one is seeing, we do not live out a righteous lifestyle.
- We fool ourselves into thinking we are enlightened but are not in the Lord’s eyes.
The challenge to have the right perspective of life
1. Through the light of the Lord Jesus
How can we learn to develop a good eye? The Lord Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12) He has the right perspective of life. The Lord Jesus has to enlighten our eyes so that we may perceive things as He does and have His perspective of life. His understanding of God, His kingdom and obedience to the King should enlighten our minds and hearts. Let us be challenged to have the Lord’s light.
2. Through the light of the Lord’s Word
The Word of God is another good source of light. The Psalmist wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) The Word of God gives wisdom, understanding and deep enlightenment. All the words the Lord Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount and on many other occasions are full of light. When we follow His words, we will be able to dispel the darkness and be filled with new light. Let us be challenged to have a good eye that can determine the right perspective of life. Let us seek to be enlightened by the light of the Lord Jesus and the Word of God to live a good, holy and righteous life.
