The birth of the Messiah King
As we prepare for Christmas, it is a delight to set our focus on the Lord Jesus. We are reminded of His miraculous birth as the Messiah King. The Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that God had shown favour to her and that she would conceive a Son who would be called “The Son of the Highest”. Gabriel added, “The Lord God would give Him the throne of His father David.” (Luke 1:32) The Lord Jesus would reign over the everlasting kingdom of God (Luke 1:33). This prophetic word was fulfilled subsequently. However, the Lord Jesus did not just focus on His kingship. He also saw Himself as the Servant of the Lord.
The Messiah’s mindset
- The Apostle Paul wrote about the mindset of Christ (Philippians 2:5–8).
- It was a mindset that not many people in this world would have.
- The Lord’s mindset caused Him to empty Himself of all the glories of heaven.
- He made Himself of no reputation in becoming a man.
- The Lord took on the form of a lowly bondservant.
- He became the epitome of what true humility is.
- He was obedient to the end…to the point of death.
- It was with this mindset that the Lord Jesus sought to be the Servant of God.
Let us be challenged to have the same humble mindset as we serve the Lord.
The Messiah’s endurance
- The task that the Messiah was called to fulfil was not easy.
- No matter how difficult things were, the Lord would not fail nor be discouraged.
- He sought to endure till He had established justice on the earth (Isaiah 42:4).
- The author of Hebrews challenged us to look to the example of the Lord Jesus.
- He described what the Lord had to endure (Hebrews 12:2).
- The Lord endured the cross.
- He despised the shame hurled at Him.
- He endured great hostility.
- How did the Lord endure so much suffering?
- He found joy that was set before Him.
- The Lord found joy in the love of God as it was so real to Him.
- He also found joy fulfilling the will of God even though it meant sacrificing His life.
- There was no greater joy for Him than to serve His Father.
Let us be challenged to find joy in the Lord to endure the difficulties of life and ministry.
The Messiah’s assurance
- God gave a wonderful promise to His Messiah Servant (Isaiah 42:5–6).
- He spoke to Him as the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
- He called Him in righteousness and assured Him that He would hold His hand.
- No matter how difficult the task would be, God would be there with Him.
- The Messiah was always aware of His Father’s promise of His helping hand and presence.
- We, too, can be aware, awed and assured of the Lord’s help and presence in all that we do.
- At the same time, we can be the Lord’s helping hand to others who are in dire need.
Let us be challenged to make a difference to someone this Christmas. Let us be challenged to follow the Lord’s example as we live for Him and serve Him.
