Understanding the perspective of God

The Lord’s Word helps us better understand Him and how He sees things. The author of Proverbs provided some insights into the Lord’s perspective on our sins. He pointed out that some sins are more serious than others.

What God hates

“These six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him:” (Proverbs 6:16)

  1. The Lord hates these seven abominable sins.
  2. They are considered worse than other sins.
  3. These sins are done against God, His commandments and His brethren.
  4. We ought to despise and hate these sins as God does.

The seven abominable sins

1. Pride…“A proud look” (Proverbs 6:17)

  1. A proud man is full of himself and shows little regard for others.
  2. God especially hates his arrogance and boastfulness.

2. Lying…“A lying tongue” (Proverbs 6:17)

  1. This is a man who speaks dishonestly and deceitfully.
  2. Whatever he says cannot be relied upon.

3. Murder…“Hands that shed innocent blood” (Proverbs 6:17)

  1. Some are willing to take the life of the innocent, which is truly unthinkable.
  2. Such unjust acts are an abomination to God.

4. Wicked heart…“A heart that devises wicked plans” (Proverbs 6:18)

  1. A man’s heart can be filled with much wickedness.
  2. He devises wicked plans to fulfil his heart’s desire.

5. Inclination to evil…“Feet that are swift in the running to evil” (Proverbs 6:18)

  1. There is the manifestation of evil in a man’s actions.
  2. He does so with speed and urgency.

6. False witness…“A false witness who speaks lies” (Proverbs 6:19)

  1. Bearing false witness distorts the truth and deceives.
  2. His lies would cause injustice and unfairness.

7. Sows discord…“And one who sows discord among brethren” (Proverbs 6:19)

  1. A man can speak things that would cause conflict and disunity.
  2. God hates this as it causes division among brethren.

The challenge to guard ourselves from these sins

Let us make every effort to guard ourselves against these abominable sins. God hates these seven sins and we should hate them as well. Let us be alert to them and avoid them at all costs. Let us be challenged to live our lives in holiness and righteousness so that God would be pleased with us.
