Those Who Trust In The Lord

The challenge to trust

We all understand the vital importance of trusting God but find it hard to trust Him consistently. It is easier to trust God during good times but trust tends to take a backseat when times are bad. The challenge is to learn to trust our great God at all times.

The Jewish pilgrims of old would journey to Jerusalem to celebrate their annual festivals. It was also a time for them to renew their faith in God and to see their hearts uplifted as they looked up to Mount Zion. Mount Zion was the centre of worship for all Jews. It was where God had chosen to place His name, where His house was built and where His presence was. The Psalmist chose Mount Zion as a comparison to those who trusted the Lord.

An inspiring image of trust

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.” (Psalm 125:1)

  1. The Psalmist sought to picture what those who trust in the Lord would be like.
  2. He wisely compared them to Mount Zion.
  3. Mount Zion is immovable and steadfast.
  4. This mountain was created by God at the beginning of time (Psalm 121:2).
  5. It continues to remain even now.
  6. Similarly, as we trust our great God, we can be strong, steady and steadfast.
  7. No matter our problems, let us be inspired to trust in God and be immovable as Mount Zion.

Wonderful reasons to trust God

There are many reasons for us to trust God.

1. The Lord surrounds His people

“As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people from this time forth and forever.” (Psalm 125:2)

  1. Mount Zion is the symbolic name for Jerusalem.
  2. Jerusalem was surrounded by mountains.
  3. They provided strong protection for the city.
  4. Similarly, the Lord surrounds His people to protect them from all dangers.
  5. Let us trust God to surround and protect us.

2. The Lord deals with those who are wicked

  1. God would not allow the sceptre of wickedness to reign in Zion (Psalm 125:3).
  2. He resisted all wicked kings that sought to gain power over Zion.
  3. The Lord is on the side of the righteous and He will defend them.
  4. He will deal with those who pursue wickedness and iniquity (Psalm 125:5).

3. The Lord blesses those who are good in His sight

  1. He will do good to those who are good and upright in heart (Psalm 125:4).
  2. He will give peace to His people…even in times of difficulties (Psalm 125:5).

Practising trust in God

Let us be challenged to practise our trust in the Lord consistently. As we have learnt to trust the Lord in the past, let us continue to trust Him in the present. No matter what difficulties we may face in the future, let us apply our faith and trust in God to overcome our challenges.
