The problem of trusting in self

As we journey through life, there will be moments, especially at crossroads, when we have to make vital choices. The tendency is to rely on ourselves and our wisdom to make those choices. We may find ourselves on the wrong path, leading to unhappy and adverse endings. This is the problem of self-trust.

The author of Proverbs warned against such a problem, “And lean not on your own understanding;” (Proverbs 3:5) When we rely on our comprehension and perception of the circumstances of life, we may end up with mistakes and not make the wisest choice. Our pride and arrogance take over, and we think we know better. Solomon gave a wiser approach, stating that we should not lean on our own understanding but turn to the Lord instead.

The challenge to trust in the Lord

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart,” (Proverbs 3:5)

  1. Trust is to place our faith and hope in nothing else but the Lord.
  2. It is to entrust ourselves and our circumstances to Him humbly and wholeheartedly.
  3. This is possible when we have a deeper knowledge of God.
  4. We see the Lord as the true source of wisdom, knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6).
  5. He protects as a shield to those who walk uprightly (Proverbs 2:7).
  6. He also preserves the way of His saints and specially keeps them (Proverbs 2:8).
  7. If we have a deeper knowledge of God, we can learn to trust Him wholeheartedly.

Commit all things to the Lord

“In all your ways acknowledge Him,” (Proverbs 3:6)

  1. Whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, the challenge is to involve God.
  2. It is to acknowledge God and the need for Him in our life.
  3. It is to commit all things to Him.
  4. We can learn to trust God and entrust everything to Him.
  5. When we trust in ourselves and take matters into our own hands, things don’t work out as well.
  6. God knows and understands our circumstances far better than we can.
  7. He sees and watches over us and knows precisely what we need.
  8. Let us be challenged to commit everything into the Lord’s hand.

Confidence in the Lord’s leading

“And He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)

  1. God knows the path that we ought to go.
  2. He can lead us in the right path.
  3. When God is involved, we will discover that His path is always righteous, just, equitable and good (Proverbs 2:9).
  4. It will be the best path for us, even though it may not be to our liking.
  5. We tend to see things from our own superficial and limited understanding.
  6. God’s ways are so much higher and more profound than our ways.
  7. Let us learn to place our confidence in God’s leading, which will always be for our good.

Let us be challenged not to trust in our own wisdom and ways. Let us desire to place our complete trust in the Lord by committing all things into His hand and depending on His leading as we face the difficulties of life.
