The challenge to walk worthy
As we seek to walk with the Lord, what is our walk really like? The Apostle Paul gave a challenge to the Ephesian church that they should walk worthy, “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,” (Eph 4:1)
The word “walk” in Greek is “peripateo” which means to “walk around”. This lexical definition is somewhat limited. It is necessary to consider other synonyms which will give us a clearer understanding of what it means to walk. One Greek word is “akoloutheo” which means “to follow”. (Luke 9:23) To walk means to follow after the person. Another word is “mimeomai” which means “to imitate”. (1 Cor 11:1) “Walking” is also to imitate the Lord. Therefore, to walk worthy is to follow and imitate the Lord in a worthy manner. Are we walking in a worthy manner? Let us be challenged to check how we are following the Lord.
Walking in an unworthy manner
In the past, we once walked in an unworthy manner, “In which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air,” (Eph 2:1) We were walking according to the pattern of the world. We were following and imitating the things of the world. Our conduct was under the influence of Satan. As the prince of the power of the air, he controlled us. We were really followers of Satan. And the walk that we had was characterised by disobedience. There is no worth in having such a walk. Let us cease from continuing such a walk and to guard ourselves from following the world and Satan. Let us be challenged to follow the Lord and not to walk in an unworthy manner.
Walking worthy of our calling
“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,” (Eph 4:1)
Our walk should measure up to God’s calling. The Apostle Paul wrote about the calling of the church. The Lord has called us to salvation and a life of great blessing.
We have been called to be blessed with every spiritual blessing. (Eph 1:3) We have received the riches of the grace of God. (Eph 1:7) The mystery of His will has also been made known to us. These are some of the rich blessings of being called. Should we not be walking worthy of the Lord’s calling? Let us be challenged to follow the Lord’s calling appreciating all the blessings we have been given.
Reasons for us to walk worthy
Why do we want to walk worthy of the Lord’s calling? These are some reasons…
- For the sake of the Lord…Paul set himself as an example and he did everything to walk worthy… for the sake of the Lord. He saw himself as a prisoner of the Lord. He was imprisoned by the Lord to follow Him and to do all His bidding. He was the Lord’s prisoner so that he may truly walk worthy of the Lord. Let us seek to walk worthy of the Lord.
- For the sake of the unity of the church…In walking worthy of our calling, we must endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit. Our challenge is to walk in lowliness, gentleness and longsuffering…bearing with each other in love.(Eph 4:2) Let us walk worthy that we may continue in oneness. Let us appreciate these reasons that we may be challenged to follow the Lord. Let us seek to cultivate a walk that is truly worthy of the Lord and His calling.
