The goodness of the Lord
A Blessed and Happy Lunar New Year! As we celebrate the Lunar New Year, let us take time to appreciate the goodness of the Lord. David wrote, “You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance.” (Psalm 65:11) How should we understand the goodness of the Lord?
Firstly, God is the source of goodness. This divine goodness can only come from Him. Secondly, all the blessings of God come from His goodness. They reflect His goodness. Thirdly, the Lord crowns the whole year with His goodness. His blessings are seen throughout the year, even when times are challenging. Fourthly, God’s goodness and blessings are truly abundant. There is no end to His blessings.
The blessings of the Lord
Let us consider some of the Lord’s blessings that David highlighted.
1. Physical blessings
“You visit the earth and water it, You greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water;
You provide their grain, for so You have prepared it.” (Psalm 65:9)
- The Lord provides the earth with all that it needs.
- There is the provision of abundant water for the earth and all living things.
- The Lord has also graciously prepared all the food needed in the world, such as grain.
- We thank God for His loving provision for all our needs each year.
2. Spiritual blessings
a. The atonement for our sins
“Iniquities prevail against me; as for our transgressions, You will provide atonement for them.” (Psalm 65:3)
- We have struggled with our sins, transgressions and iniquities over the year.
- Yet, the Lord has provided His spiritual atonement for them.
- The blessing of the Lord’s forgiveness through His mercy is to be greatly appreciated.
b. The privilege of being chosen to approach Him
“Blessed is the man You choose, and cause to approach You, that he may dwell in Your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your holy temple.” (Psalm 65:4)
- David understood the privilege of God choosing and causing His servants to approach Him.
- As His servants, we have the joy of being chosen and given access to come before Him.
- There is no greater privilege than for us to dwell in the house of the Lord and offer Him worship.
- Let us seek to appreciate and be satisfied with the Lord’s goodness.
c. The answers to our prayers
“By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us, O God of our salvation,” (Psalm 65:5)
- We thank God that He is the God of our salvation…our deliverance.
- He has heard and answered our prayers throughout the year.
- Through His awesome power, the Lord had done amazing deeds in answer to our prayers.
Our response to the goodness of the Lord
As we appreciate the Lord’s abundant goodness, let us respond appropriately. Let us sing and praise the Lord for all our physical blessings (Psalm 65:1,13). Let us rejoice with heartfelt gratitude for our manifold spiritual blessings that the Lord has graciously and lovingly given.
