Be Still and Know that I Am God

As part of celebrating Bethel’s 20th Anniversary I went on a trip to Western Australia and I had the opportunity to visit a number of places. One place that was memorable was the Busselton Jetty.  The jetty extends about 1.8km out into the waters with nothing else around it. This is a picture that was taken just halfway across the entire jetty.

What stood out to me about the jetty was how it withstood storms and strong winds for over more than a hundred years, servicing over 5000 vessels in its time. I personally experienced a slight storm at the jetty when I was walking back from the end. The winds were so strong that I could feel my body being physically moved by it. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing in sight that provided any form of protection. And yet, the timber-piled jetty stood and continues to stand. The experience at the Busselton Jetty reminded me about how we need God in life. Life is filled with ups and downs, good and bad times. But in the midst of difficult moments, God is our pillar of strength and refuge. When we seem to be all alone, surrounded by unpleasant situations, God is with us to stand against the storms of life.

In Psalm 46:1-2, the Psalmist proclaims:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed…”

I particularly like verse 10 which reads,

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

We believe in a God who is always there for us even in the most challenging times. Because of His protection and provision, we can face adversity with strength. How precious a God we have! May we always recognize that we need God through all that we go throguh. Let’s seek to be conscious of Him so much more, to always remind ourselves that He is God of our lives.
