I Will Lift Up My Eyes To The Hills

“MY HELP COMES FROM THE LORD WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH”
As evening descended on Yosemite Park, I took a moment to look at the majestic granite hills that surrounded this valley. Some of these hanging cliffs rise up to about 3000– 4000ft above the valley floor. The valley itself is already 4000ft above sea level. It was a most beautiful sight to behold. Psalm 121 came to mind as I looked at the hills before me.
I will lift up my eyes to the hills-from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
This psalm was written as part of a series of Psalms called the “Songs of Ascent”. They were written for pilgrims as they made their way to Jerusalem for their yearly pilgrimages. As they travelled towards the city, they would see the rolling hills that surrounded Jerusalem. The temple of God was at Jerusalem and the hills would remind them of His presence. The Psalmist who looked to the hills would fondly recall that the Lord God was his greatest source of help . It is He who made the heavens and the earth. He created all the stars and all the hills of the world with His mighty power. Surely, the Lord God with His infinite power can also help us in our time of need.
“HE WHO KEEPS YOU…”
This God who created the heavens and the earth also helps and keeps us .
- He is our help every moment of the day
He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121:2
It is a fact that the Lord God does not sleep and He specially keeps us throughout the day. And yet, we must not go away thinking that we would not slip and fall. Evil can still cause us to fall. Sometimes, it is because of our sinfulness and foolishness that causes us to fall. And yet the Lord would watch out for us and deliver us. He will pluck us out of the net (Psalm 25:15) when we call on Him for help.
- He is our help against every form of evil
The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.” Psalm 121:8
The Lord also will preserve us from all kinds of evil. Preservation of life is what God would do for us until our time on earth is up. He will preserve our soul and will keep us always. There is nothing that the Lord cannot protect us from.
- He is our help everywhere
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth and even forevermore” Psalm 121:8
Wherever we go and in whatever we do, the Lord will protect us and preserve us now and forever. Let’s learn to always trust in the Lord as our greatest source of help.
