Moon Glory

MOON GLORY

The moon was shining brightly when I took this picture at sunset.  I had just seen a most serene and picturesque sunset and the moon was present in the evening sky.  What do you see when you look at the moon?   Some say that they see the outline of a rabbit.   Others say that they see a pair of hands on the moon.  Still others say that they see the outline of a man on the moon.  I asked the Indian brethren what they saw on the moon and one of them said that they see a woman cooking chapatti (This would be a case of what we call cultural contextualising).  Of course, what we are seeing on the surface of the moon are craters and mountains and ridges.  And yet, there is more to this than meets the eye when we see the moon and the stars with eyes of faith.   When David saw the full moon and stars shining above, he saw the greatness of glory of God’s creation.

“O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens!”  Psalm 8:1

He stood in awe at how great and powerful the Lord God is.   It was His power and wisdom that created all the stars in the universe.   On earth, we can behold and stand in awe of the Lord’s great and amazing creations.   His name is considered as most excellent in all the earth.   His glory is to be highly regarded above the heavens.  It is indeed immense and immeasurable.  Truly, the Lord our Lord deserves the highest praise.

CROWNED WITH GLORY AND HONOUR

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?”  For You have made him a little lower than the angels and You have crowned him with glory and honor.”  – Psalm 8:5

When we look at the surpassing greatness of the Lord’s creation on earth and in the universe, it is most humbling to know that He, the great Creator, would even think us.   The Psalmist was standing in awe that the Lord would even care for us despite us being so small when compared to the great universe.   The reason is because He had crowned mankind with glory and honour.   The stars and moon reflect His glory.  However, there is one thing that they do not have is honour.   Honour is only given to mankind.    The Lord God created us with great potential for honour and strength.   Within every baby, He had ordained strength that in time to come will have the ability to overcome their enemies.   We are made to have dominion over all created animals on earth.   We are indeed crowned with glory and honour.   That is why the Psalmist began and ended the Psalm with great praise to God.

“O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth,…” Psalm 8:9

May we also offer great praise to the Lord for crowning us with glory and honour!
