Mountain Range of Singing

“The hills are alive with the sound of music…” These were the words sung by Julie Andrews in an old musical called the Sound of Music.  They came to mind as I stood watching this beautiful scene at the Yosemite national park.  It was as if the mountains were like a choir singing their praises to God. I imagine the left mountain to be like a conductor.  And those on the right to be like choir members singing their heart out to God.  This scenic outlook is called the tunnel view.  This is the stunning first view that visitors by road would have of Yosemite Park.  It includes the main surrounding features of the park.  Scientists say, according to the Yosemite Park website that the Yosemite valley, was carved out by a huge glacier many years ago.  And today, the Merced river continues to run through it.  I prefer to think of God creating these magnificent mountains as part of His grand design of creation.  It is exhilarating just standing there, listening to the howling wind carrying “loud” songs of joy coming from the mountains in praise of our Lord.

“BREAK OUT IN SINGING, O MOUNTAINS”

“Sing, O heavens! Be Joyful, O earth! And break forth in singing, O mountains! For the LORD has comforted His people, and will have mercy on His afflicted.”  – Isaiah 49:12

The prophet Isaiah made a call for all of creation to give praise to God.  Heaven and earth were to be joyful and to sing forth the glory of God.   The mountains despite being inanimate objects were to come alive and to sing to the Lord.    They were personified as singers breaking forth into praise and honour to God.  The main reason for giving joyful praise to God was that He was going to bring comfort to His people.   He will be merciful to those who were afflicted in exile.   The Lord God will bring His people back and restore them.    There will be further restoration when the Servant of the Lord, Jesus Christ, comes and brings back Jacob to Himself (Isa. 49:5).  He would minister to the people of Israel and be a light to the Gentiles.   He would be a covenant to the people to restore the earth (Isa. 49:8).  This will be done in its fullness when our Saviour comes again to establish His Kingdom.   Let’s seek to appreciate the Lord’s mercy and comfort upon His people.   He will bring about restoration to them.  If mountains are personified as singers to break forth and sing to God, so much more we who are alive should joyfully sing to the Lord for His mercies and comfort in our life.
