DO NOT FRET

King David had gone through his fair share of challenges in life. He had faced all kinds of evildoers who had risen against him and brought wicked schemes to pass (Psalm 37:14). He knew that it was easy for him to fret and to be emotionally affected by them. As he wrote Psalm 37, he sought to admonish his readers to not fret.

Do not fret…”   Psalm 37:1

David had come to a stage in his life where he was much older. He had learnt to trust in the Lord concerning all the challenges in his life. His encouragement to his readers was not to fret but to place their full trust in God.

HAVING A DEEPER PERSONAL TRUST IN GOD

1. Learning to have absolute trust in God

Trust in the LORD…”   Psalm 37:3

David was fully assured that God can be trusted in. He was able to admonish others to trust Him because he had experienced Him as LORD in his life. The Lord had helped David stand against king Saul and other enemies who wanted him dead. He became the last man standing. He knew that others could also learn to trust fully in the Lord. They were to trust in the Lord with all their heart.

2. Feeding on the faithfulness of God

Feed on His faithfulness…”  Psalm 37:3

The Lord God was also faithful to David from the beginning of his life to much older. The Lord was with him when he was fighting Goliath. He was also with him in overcoming the rebellion from his own son. The Lord was faithful to him every step of the way even in times of being chastened by Him. David was able to remember, dwell and feed on His faithfulness. He found comfort and strength in God’s continual demonstration of mercy and grace to him. We too can feed on the Lord’s faithfulness. It is wonderful to know that God is still faithful even when we struggle in faith.

PRACTICE OF FAITH IN DOING THE RIGHT THINGS

And do good, dwell in the land…”   Psalm 37:3

The challenge from David to his readers was to do the right things. Trust and action go together. As they trusted in the Lord and fed on His faithfulness, they were to find the strength to continue to do that which was good. They were to walk in righteousness and to practise goodness. They were to find grace from the Lord to not panic and run from their problems. They were to dwell in the land, remain resolute and to press on.

For those taking exams, may this be a time of trusting in the Lord and feeding on God’s faithfulness to us. Has God not been there for you all this while? Let’s stay the course. Let’s trust in Him and find the strength to press on and finish your exams well.
