Practising Principles Of Prayer

God hears and answers our prayers. This is a wonderful Biblical truth. As we enter into the New Year, let’s seek to be more committed to the practice of prayer. During Down Memory Lane, Pastor sent out a call for us to pray even more in 2011. Young people, do you know how to pray prayers that the Lord will answer? In the text of John 15, the Lord Jesus taught important principles of prayer. These are the principles that we need to work with.

1. Praying In The Light Of Abiding In The Lord And His Word

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
John 15:7

The word “if” denotes a responsibility on our part to fulfil. Our challenge is to get down to abiding in the Lord. We need to actively include the Lord in our lives and to remain in the sphere of His presence and fellowship. Furthermore, His words must abide within us. Very often, what has been taught to us is soon forgotten. We do not retain what has been taught. Our commitment is to let His word become a real and important part of our lives and ministry. When we pray in the light of abiding in the Lord and His word, He will hear us.

2. Praying That The Lord’s Name Be Glorified

“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”
John 15:8

The Lord Jesus wanted His disciples to pray for God and His name to be glorified. This is within the context of fruit-bearing. Part of the idea of being disciples of the Lord Jesus is that we were meant to bear much fruit. Not only will pruning bring about more fruit in our life (John 15:2), prayer will also bring about much fruit. This will glorify the Father in heaven. Young people, let’s seek to pray that the Lord’s name be glorified through the fruitfulness of our life and ministry.

3. Praying With Absolute Confidence In The Lord

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
John 15:7

The word “ask” in the Greek has an imperatival force. In other words, the Lord wants us to “command” Him with regards to what we desire. This means that we are to ask with confidence in the Lord as we abide in Him and His word. And the Lord will hear and answer prayers. The Lord Jesus had taught His disciples to “ask and it will be given” (Matthew 7:7). May we learn to pray with absolute confidence in the Lord. Let’s exercise faith in this promise that God will hear and answer prayers. Let’s ask in faith and humbly, and it shall be done for us.
