BEGINNING AND ENDING THE DAY WITH SEEKING THE LORD

“Early Will I Seek You”

What is the first thing you do each morning? For the Psalmist, he determined that he would seek the Lord early.

“O God, you are my God;
Early will I seek you;

My soul thirsts for you;

My flesh longs for you

In a dry and thirsty land

Where there is no water.

So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,

To see Your power and Your glory.”

Psalm 63:1-2

There was a deep longing within the Psalmist to seek the Lord. Why is this so? It was because he realised that his soul’s thirst could only be quenched through a time of fellowshipping with the Lord. David at this point of time was dwelling in the wilderness of Judah. He was most probably running and hiding from enemies who were coming after him. As much as he was physically surrounded by a dry wilderness and was longing for physical water, he realised his soul was also longing for the Lord. That is why he rose early in the morning to seek Him.

Furthermore, spending time with the Lord was not something he did so that he could say that he had done his “quiet time”. He really looked for the Lord to discover and know Him further. He desired to see the Lord’s power and His glory. His heart was filled with joy as he did this. There is so much that we can still discover of the Lord. Young people, let’s determine like the Psalmist to start the day right by seeking early the Lord and to be illumined to the wonderful truths about Him and His ways.

“When I Remember You On My Bed”

“When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.

Because You have been my help,

Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.

My soul follows close behind You;

Your right hand upholds me.”

Psalm 63:6-8

The Psalmist not only started his day with the Lord. He also ended the day by remembering and dwelling on Him. How easy it is for us to end the day by setting the Lord aside and doing our own things! For David, he sought to ponder and mediate on the Lord in the night watches. The perimeters of a king’s camp would be specially guarded by soldiers throughout the day and night. David would spend time meditating on the Lord even as the guards stand guard and watch through the night.

Why would he do this? It was because the Lord had been his help throughout the day. The Lord was specially there to protect and aid him. The Psalmist sought to rejoice in the shadow of His wings. He likened God to an eagle soaring above watching over its young. He found great joy in the protection and the presence of the Lord in his life. David determined that he would follow close behind the Lord as His hand upholds him. Young people, if the Lord has been our help, then let’s spend that time each night with Him by meditating on Him. Let’s remember Him each night before we sleep and not forget about Him. Let’s truly rejoice in the Lord and praise Him because He is our God and help.
