Choosing To Set Aside Self-Glory

Pride is a sin that all of us grapple with. It lurks within us and it expresses itself in many different forms. One of them is the seeking of self-glory. While we know that we need to be humble before the Lord in life and in ministry, the reality of the matter is that we are often concerned with how we look and appear in the sight of man. The challenge for us is to seek to set aside our own self-glory and to focus on glorifying the majesty of the Lord. This can be seen in the text of Psalm 115.

“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us …”
Psalm 115:1

God gives honor to those who seek to honor Him. And yet the Psalmist prayed that God would render honor to His name far more than to himself. He chose not to focus on himself as the object of praise. He chose instead to focus on God’s glory.

Giving God And His Name All The Glory

“But to Your name give glory …”
Psalm 115:1

The Psalmist had the highest regard for the Lord’s name and he prayed that He and His name would be glorified above all things. What are some of the reasons for doing this?

1. Because Of His Mercy And Truth

“Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.”

Psalm 115:1

God had been most merciful to the Psalmist. He had experienced the Lord’s mercies in blessing his life. The Lord had been his help and shield. He had seen the faithfulness of God’s truth. Truly, His abundant mercies are to be deeply appreciated.

2. Because God Is Truly Alive And Sovereign Over All Things

“But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.”

Psalm 115:3

God is a living and sovereign King. He is a God who reigns from heaven above and He does all things according to His good pleasure. He has the prerogative to do all that He pleases unlike idols whose visages are determined by the minds of men. God is in absolutely full control of our lives. What a blessed thought!

The Challenge For All To Trust In God

“O Israel, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.

O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;

He is their help and their shield.

You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;

He is their help and their shield.”

Psalm 115:9-11

All glory is to be given to God. A national challenge was sent out for all to solely trust in Him. Trusting in God was meant for everyone. The servants of God and all who feared Him were to trust in Him. Let’s all learn to have greater trust in Him for the future and for the blessings of life and ministry. Let’s seek to trust in God together as His people.
