The Significance Of Our Lord Jesus Dying On The Cross

As we approach Easter, let’s re-appreciate what the Lord Jesus did for us on the cross. His death by crucifixion was indeed most significant.

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death”
Hebrews 2:9

The Lord Jesus, though He was the Son of God, full of glory and honor, became like one of us. He suffered much on the cross for our sins. He tasted death on our behalf. Why did Christ go through so much for our sake?

1. Because He Considered Us As His Brethren

“For which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren”
Hebrews 2:11

The Lord Jesus recognized us as His beloved brethren. Even though we have sinned much against Him, He is still not ashamed to call us His brothers and sisters. He identified with us and died for us because He regarded us as brethren.

2. Because He Wanted To Destroy The Power Of The Evil One

“That through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
Hebrews 2:14-15

Our Lord also chose to die a cruel death so that He might destroy the power of the evil one over us. The evil one once used the fear of death against us. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, He overcame and destroyed the power of the evil one and the fear that death had over us. In Christ, we do not need to fear death anymore.

3. Because He Wanted To Be A Merciful And Faithful High Priest To Us

“That He might be a merciful and faithful High priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”
Hebrews 2:17

When Christ resurrected from the dead, He also became our heavenly High Priest. He now intercedes on our behalf before God. As our merciful and faithful High Priest, He makes propitiation for our sins. He will aid us in our times of need.

Having A Greater Sense Of Gratitude Towards Our Lord

As we appreciate the significance of Christ’s death and resurrection, let’s have a greater sense of gratitude. For those performing during the Easter concerts, let’s express our gratefulness to the Lord by offering great praise and thanksgiving to Him. Let’s respond to the Lord with a greater sense of appreciation and joy. Let’s increase our love for Him. Let’s give God and the Lord Jesus all the glory.
