“BY THIS WE KNOW THAT WE KNOW HIM”

Mere Declaration Of Knowing Jesus Is Not Enough

Mere verbal declaration of faith in Jesus is not a fool-proof gauge of possession of true salvation. If a person affirms that he has genuine faith in Christ but he does not have any regard for the Lord’s commandments nor practise them, his faith is questionable.

“He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”
1 John 2:4

John in his first epistle was dealing with false teachings that had infiltrated the Church. He taught that those who kept saying that they knew the Lord but there was no change in their lives were lying to themselves. They did not show forth the truth of God’s word in their life and thus, were not true believers. Having mere declaration of having faith is not enough. We need to show it by our life.

“Now By This …”

“Now by this we know that we know Him”
1 John 2:3

“By this we know that we are in Him.”
1 John 2:5

What is the means by which we can establish that a person really knows the Lord?

1. Seeking To Continuously Obey The Word Of God.

“If we keep His commandments.”
1 John 2:3

“But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him.”
1 John 2:5

A true believer of Christ must show from his life that he loves and obeys the commandments of God. The means by which we can verify our genuine faith in the Lord is that we would have the highest regard for His commandments and we would seek to keep them. A real relationship with the Lord Jesus would cause us to respond to His word. A person who follows His word demonstrates that God’s love dwells in his heart and he has a love for Him and His people. Young people, are we seeking to keep His commandments?

2. Deeply Challenged To Walk As Jesus Walked

“He who says he abides in Him ought also to walk just as He walked.”
1 John 2:6

A true believer of Christ would abide in Him and walk as He walked on this earth. Merely stating that we are abiding in Him is also not enough. Our life must seek to reflect the light of the Lord Jesus in all that we do. People would be able to recognise and discern that we are truly followers of the Lord Jesus. We would feel a deep sense of necessity to emulate His great example and to walk in His footsteps. Young people, let’s show our faith in the Lord Jesus by being gracious and loving as He was on this earth. Let’s walk as He walked.
