When Facing Life’s Prolonged Challenges

Sometimes, the problems or challenges we face are not momentary issues. Some seem to persist with a never-ending nature. It can be most challenging with reference to the matter of sustaining our trust in God. In the text of Psalm 57, the Psalmist was going through a prolonged difficult situation. He described what he was going through as “calamities”.

“Until these calamities have passed by.”
Psalm 57:1

Calamities like typhoons and tsunamis can be devastating. Their destructive effects can last a long time. In a similar way, the challenges of life can take their toll on us. They can create all kinds of doubts in our mind and heart. We must not allow ourselves to rescind our trust in God when our predicament seems to be protracted. On the contrary, we must call on every ounce of faith that we have and channel it towards placing a deeper and continuing trust in our Lord.

Sustaining Our Trust In God

“For my soul trusts in You”
Psalm 57:1

The psalmist was able to persevere in trusting God. How did he do this?

1. Inspiring Symbol Of God As A Mother Bird Sustains Our Trust

“And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge”
Psalm 57:1

Symbols are important. They inspire us. The Psalmist used the symbol of a loving and protective mother bird to aid him in trusting in God. “The shadow of His wings” depicts how the mother bird, most probably an eagle, is covering and protecting her little ones from dangers that arose. Her shadow reminds the little birds that their mother is there watching over them. The symbol of God as a mother eagle covering its wings on us aids us to trust in Him as our refuge until these “calamites” have stopped.

2. Deeping Our Knowledge Of God Sustains Our Trust

“God Most High …
To God who performs all things for me …
God shall send forth His mercy and His truth.”

Psalm 57:2-3

The more you know a good person well, the more you can trust him. In a greater way, when we are able to know God deeply, we can sustain our trust in Him. The Psalmist saw God as one who is “God Most High”. He is a God who is far above all other gods or human beings. David also recognised how the Lord had performed many things for him. The Lord had demonstrated His power and had done great things for him. Furthermore, he was able to see how the Lord sent out His mercy and His truth and they save His people from trouble and difficulties. David had a deeper knowledge of God. Let’s grow deeper in our knowledge of God in order that we may continue to trust Him and to trust Him more.
