Working At Being One

Practice speaks louder than words. There is no point just speaking and elucidating about being integrated. Ultimately, all of us have to get down to being united as one. Are we in a state of solidarity yet? In reality, we may still have to work hard at it. The challenge from Paul to the Colossian Church was to be one in having the same love in Christ and possessing oneness of mind (Philippians 2:2). Let’s seek to practise this spirit of oneness. Let’s work at being integrated.

Not Focusing On Self

How can we go about striving to be one? Let’s begin by not focusing on ourselves.

1. Not Being Self-Centred

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit”
Philippians 2:3

Paul was emphasising that nothing in life and ministry should be done for selfish gains or for personal vainglory. We should not be self-centred in our motives in service.

2. Not Focusing Only On Our Own Interest

“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests”
Philippians 2:4

Yes, it is a valid thing for us to look out for our own interest. But it should not be the only thing that we are pre-occupied with. The challenge is to go beyond ourselves.

Learning To Have A Higher Regard For Others

Paul’s exhortation to the Church was to have the highest regard for each other.

1. Regarding Others Better Than Ourselves

“But in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”
Philippians 2:3

With all humility, we must seek to think lowly of ourselves in service and to regard others more highly. Let’s seek to have a humble mindset in ministry.

2. Looking Out For The Interest Of Others

“But also for the interests of others.”
Philippians 2:4

We must also seek to look out for the interest of others. We must seek to go beyond just our own interest. Other peoples’ interests must also be thought of and looked into. Let’s exercise our faith in caring for the needs of others too.
