I Am the True Bread from Heaven

FAR GREATER THAN SEEKING PHYSICAL BREAD / THINGS

In all that He did, the Lord Jesus demonstrated great grace and expounded on the truth of the word. As He multiplied the bread and fish for the multitudes (John 6:5-14), He sought to exhibit how most gracious He was to them and to help them see the truth concerning who He is. However, instead of looking at the miraculous sign that points to who Jesus is, the people wanted more of the physical bread itself. They sought Him because they were focused on the physical plane. The Lord Jesus had to direct their focus towards the spiritual plane. He wanted them to see how much greater He is as the true and living bread from heaven than the “manna” that they were seeking after.

THE COMPARISON BETWEEN SEEKING THE TRUE BREAD OF LIFE AND PHYSICAL BREAD

1. THE ETERNAL RESULTS OF COMING TO THE BREAD OF LIFE

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
John 6:35

A. HAVING TOTAL SPIRITUAL SATISFACTION

When we come to the true and living bread of life and believe in Him, we would never spiritually hunger or thirst again. Spiritual satisfaction in the Lord Jesus is deep and complete. He as the bread of life meets all our spiritual needs. We are spiritually complete in Him (Colossians 2:10).

B. HAVING SPIRITUAL ETERNAL LIFE (JOHN 6:50-51)

The Lord Jesus will give His life for the life of the world. If people were to “partake” of the living bread from heaven, they will spiritually not die. The Lord Jesus will bring life to their soul forever. When we believe in the Lord and His word, we will have eternal life in heaven.

2. THE EPHEMERAL RESULTS OF SEEKING PHYSICAL BREAD (JOHN 6:49)

A. ONLY TEMPORAL PHYSICAL SATISFACTION

The physical bread / material things that people look for will only bring momentary satisfaction. The satisfaction we have from the things of the world is temporal. It does not last at all.

B. LIMITED PHYSICAL LIFE

Eating physical bread will sustain life for only one’s present life. Those who ate the physical bread (manna) in the wilderness all eventually died. The results of eating physical bread are only of temporal value.

NOT ALL WILL COME TO THE LORD JESUS

“But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.”
John 6:36

Despite all that the Lord Jesus has done for the world, not all would come to Him. He knew that not all who were “following” Him had faith in Him. He knew what was in the heart of men (John 2:24-25). They had seen all that He had done and the signs borne witness of who He really is and yet they did not believe in Him. The people were fixed in their superficial understanding of the Lord Jesus. Not all will be drawn by the Father to come to our Saviour (John 6:44). This is something to be expected as we bear witness for God.

PERSONAL APPLICATION

1. FOR SEEKERS (THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO BELIEVE IN CHRIST)

The challenge is for seekers to come to the Lord Jesus and to believe in Him as the true bread of life. There is nothing / no one who can compare with Him. Let’s seek to have real faith in Him.

2. FOR BELIEVERS

Let’s always be thankful for this privilege of seeking the Lord Jesus and finding spiritual satisfaction and eternal life in Him and His word. Let’s also understand as we reach out to others that some will not come to believe in the Lord Jesus. Sadly, this is something that we have to be prepared for.
