IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED

The Great Purpose Of Glorifying God

Chinese New Year should be an exciting time for us. The context of which I write is far more than just participating in the usual celebratory indulging in Chinese New Year cookies and delighting in the tallying of our Ang Pow money for the year. There is a greater will … the purpose of God which we can be excited about … glorify Him in all things that we do.

“That in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ”
1 Peter 4:11b

The leading apostle Peter wrote these words to fellow Christians in the dispersion that they were to always give God the glory in all things that they did. Peter addressed the problem of sinning against God and exhorted fellow brethren to not live in the flesh fulfilling the lusts of men but for the will of God (1 Peter 4:2). They should not continue like the Gentiles in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness revelries and drinking parties (1 Peter 4:3). Instead, they should glorify the Lord through the way they live their life for Him. This Chinese New Year and beyond, let’s seek to glorify the Lord in all that we do.

The Means To Glorify The Lord God

1. Being Sober-Minded And Watchful In Prayer

“Therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.”
1 Peter 4:7

Peter was very conscious that Christ was coming again. He challenged the brethren to be sober-minded and vigilant in prayer for people. Every year that passes by, we must be even more conscious that the Lord would come soon for us. Let’s not waste time on useless things. Let’s take time to be serious and watchful in prayer as the Lord Jesus was.

2. Loving One Another Sincerely

“And above all things have fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins.'”
1 Peter 4:8

God’s glory can also be seen through the way we love one another. Peter encouraged the brethren to have a sincere and continuing love for each other despite the challenges that they may have with each other. Hatred will stir up strife but love in covering all sins can stop quarrels (Proverbs 10:12). Let’s learn to love in a way where we do not seek to highlight the sins of others.

3. Being Hospitable To One Another

“Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.”
1 Peter 4:9

Chinese New Year is also about being hospitable to people who may come to our house. We can be kind and caring to people, even though we may not know them well. We can help our parents in being hospitable without grumbling. God’s light shines through when we are gracious to people without complaining about it.

4. Learning To Minister To One Another

“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another as good stewards”
1 Peter 4:10

Last but not least, we can minister to each other with grace gifts that God has given to us. Whatever God has given us, let’s use them well as good stewards of His grace. We can be a blessing to people. Let’s seek to minister in whatever way we can according to His grace that we may glorify Him.

Happy Chinese New Year!
