The Example Of Nehemiah In Being Concerned For His Brethren

The way to show care is best expressed not in words only but in actual deeds. This was something that was very much exemplified in the life of Nehemiah. Even though he was in captivity and he was working as a cupbearer in the king’s court, he expressed love for his fellow brethren by showing deep concern for them. How did he show this?

1. By Asking How Others Were Doing

“That Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.”
Nehemiah 1:2

When Hanani, a relative of Nehemiah, came from Judah to Babylon, he asked how the Jews, who had survived the destruction of Jerusalem, were doing. He also asked about the state of the city of Jerusalem which the Jews loved. Nehemiah was concerned enough to ask how his fellow brethren were doing.

2. By Identifying With Those Who Are In Need

“So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days”
Nehemiah 1:4

The survivors who were left in the province were in great distress and reproach. The walls of Jerusalem were broken down, the gates were burned down, and the people were exposed to grave dangers. When Nehemiah heard this, he felt deeply for them. He mourned for them for many days. He was deeply moved with pity for the people.

The Practice Of Showing Care

Nehemiah got down to showing care for his brethren.

1. Praying For Others

“I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.”
Nehemiah 1:4

Nehemiah prayed with a great sense of intensity for His people. He prayed that God would be merciful to his brethren. He cared enough to intercede on behalf of his people who were in great distress. Let’s also learn to care enough to pray for others.

2. Doing Something To Help

Nehemiah himself wanted to go and see how the people were. He was going to try to be with his own people in Israel and see how he could help. If we want to show care, let’s also do something practical to aid those in need. Do you know of a friend who needs help? Let’s show real care by actually getting down to being there for him.
