RECOGNISING THE SOVEREIGN REIGN OF THE LORD JESUS
There is no person greater than our Lord Jesus Christ. By the power of God, He had been raised from the dead and was given a most highly exalted position in heaven (Ephesians 1:20). Because of this, there should be the highest regard and honour given to the Lord Jesus. The challenge for us is to go beyond just having a theoretical understanding of Him to an enlightened understanding and view of who He is. The Lord Jesus in reality reigns supreme over all things.
1. A POSITION GREATER THAN ANY OTHER
“And seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion …”
Ephesians 1:20-21
The Lord Jesus has been given the most privileged and exalted position of sitting at the right hand of the throne of God. It is a position of unsurpassed power and sovereignty. It is far higher than any other position of any spiritual being. “Far above” has the idea of rank. He is ranked much higher than any other. “Principality”, “power”, “might” and “dominion” are references to spiritual beings with great power and authority. They can be either good or fallen angels. A normal angel is so powerful that it can kill one hundred and eighty-five thousand soldiers in one evening (Isaiah 37:36). Can you imagine the great power and authority of these principalities and dominions! Even more so is the position of the Lord Jesus. It is far, far greater than any other being.
2. A NAME GREATER THAN ANY OTHER
“… And every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.”
Ephesians 1:21
The Lord’s name is also far greater than any other. This greatness of His name is timeless. His name is far greater than any name, not only in this present time but in the ages that will come. There will never be another name that will be as great than the Lord’s. It will stand throughout all eternity. Paul also wrote of how it is at the name of Jesus that every knee will bow both in the physical and in the spiritual realm. Every human and spiritual being (including Satan) will confess that Jesus is Lord. Those who are reluctant would be forced to bow before Him. This will bring great glory to the Father (Philippians 2:9-10).
3. NO AUTHORITY GREATER THAN THE LORD’S
“And He put all things under His feet”
Ephesians 1:22
The word “put” comes from the Greek word “hupotassó”. There is the idea of subjugation. The Lord God placed all things under the authority of the Lord Jesus. This was prophesied by David in one of his psalms.
“The Lord said to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’”
Psalm 110:1
The Lord God was written as speaking to the Lord Jesus. He will be seated at the right hand of God’s throne until all His enemies would be His footstool. The footstool is a common household item that people placed their feet on. This scene portrayed is one of a triumphant king being victorious over his enemies and they have become His footstool. All His enemies, a reference to the demonic spirits and rebellious kings, would have to submit to the lordship of Jesus. In God’s mind, all things have been placed under His feet. In time to come, we will see the fullness of this idea in Christ’s reign on earth. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords.
PERSONAL APPLICATION
Young people, let’s have a higher view of the Lord Jesus. He is highly exalted and has been given tremendous authority and power. Let’s fear Him and give Him the great regard that is due to Him. Our part is to trust in His sovereignty over our lives. Let’s humbly bow before Him and give Him all the glory.
