PRACTISING TRUST IN GOD

Don’t Fret, Just Trust
Do you have a problem of fretting? Sometimes, when things are overwhelming, it is so easy for us to fret and be troubled over matters. The Psalmist in the text of Psalm 37 was exhorting the people not to fret when the problems of life come. There were evil men who were prospering in their way. They were getting away with works of iniquity and schemes. David realised how fretting only causes harm (Psalm 37:8). There was no use worrying and being upset. The challenge for us is to fret less and to trust in God more.
1. Choosing To Have An Active Trust In The Lord
“Trust in the Lord, and do good”
Psalm 37:3
The challenge from David was for the people to place their trust in the Lord for all things. They are to learn to engage in an active trust in the Lord. Trusting in God is not just about sitting down and doing nothing. Real trust will cause us to act in faith. We will practise trust by doing good to all. We will choose to do good rather than to do evil.
2. Continue To Live And Not Run Away
“Dwell in the land”
Psalm 37:3
The word “dwell” means to “live” in the land. The encouragement from the Psalmist was for the people to choose to remain where they are and to face up to difficulties rather than to run away from them. Life must go on. We must continue to live rather than to think of taking the easy way out. Let’s learn to focus on the Lord and not on our problems.
3. Contemplate God’s Faithfulness Deeply
“And feed on His faithfulness”
Psalm 37:3
We must also take time to remember God’s faithfulness to us. It is good for us to dwell on how God has been there for us in the past. He has been ever faithful in protecting us. We can “feed” on God’s faithfulness. As He was in the past, so He will be in the future. When we “feed” on how wonderful God is, our soul becomes “full”.
4. Commit Our Ways To The Lord
“Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.”
Psalm 37:5
Last but not least, we must learn to pray and commit things to God. Instead of fretting, we can pray to Him. After we have prayed, we must trust in Him. The Lord will bring all things to pass. He will lead us through our difficulties. God will make a way for us when there seems to be no way. Let’s learn to commit our ways to Him even more.
