The Concept Of A Living Sacrifice

One of the most significant things that a Christian can do is to be a “living sacrifice”. How do we understand this concept of a “living sacrifice”?

“That you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God”
Romans 12:1

Firstly, in the Old Testament, Israel offered sacrifices to God as part of their worship. One aspect of offering sacrifices was to choose that which was the best. The people were to choose animals without blemish for sacrifice. They were to choose the finest of flour to be offered. Only then would God accept their offering. Secondly, in the Old Testament, animals were killed and offered to God. In the context of the text of Romans 12:1, Christians were meant to be sacrifices too. Paul saw how our lives were meant to be a “sacrifice” being offered to God. We were meant to give of ourselves, sanctified and set apart for His use.

The Presentation Of Our Whole Lives To God

When we present our lives, it is to be a “whole life” thing. It is not presenting our lives only towards the end of our life “when we have a bit more time”. It is the offering of our whole life to God from now to the day we die. It is not just offering a part of our life but the whole of it. Our presentation of our lives should be one of total consecration. Our entire life is meant to be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.

Powerful Factors That Compel Us To Be A Living Sacrifice

What should compel us to present our lives as a living sacrifice to God?

1. Having A Deep Appreciation Of The Mercies Of God

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God”
Romans 12:1

The Lord has done so much for us through His great mercies. From Romans 1-8, we read of God’s wonderful plan of salvation for all men. He has given us a great salvation. How can we not respond by being a living sacrifice?

2. Understanding That This Is The Only Logical Thing To Do

“Which is your reasonable service.”
Romans 12:1

Is being a “living sacrifice” too much to ask of us? The answer is “No”. If the Lord Jesus, the Son of God and the Saviour of the world, offered His own life for our benefit, it is only reasonable and logical that we give back our lives to Him. With a sense of indebtedness, let’s offer our lives to the Lord for His use and service.
