When Our Foundational Biblical Knowledge Is Incomplete

There is the grave danger of being deceived when our foundational knowledge of God is incomplete. Paul had this deep concern for the Colossian Church as he wrote to them. The church was being plagued by false teachings that promoted aberrations of the doctrine of Christ. Some of the people still believed that they needed to keep made-made commandments and doctrines of men in order to be saved. Of course, this was contrary to the understanding of having genuine faith in Christ (Colossians 2:22). Paul knew that the Colossian Church needed to have a mature understanding of God lest they be deceived by the philosophy and traditions of men (Colossians 2:8). Our challenge is to ensure that we are building our life and ministry on the foundation of God’s word that we may be able to stand against false teachers.

Growing In Our Knowledge Of God

“As it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth”
Colossians 1:6

“Do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding”
Colossians 1:9

“And increasing in the knowledge of God”
Colossians 1:10

Paul saw the need for the Colossian Church to learn further and to grow in their knowledge of God and His will. They needed to have a deeper and more experiential knowledge of Him. The first level of knowledge is about our salvation. The Colossians heard and knew the grace of God as truth in their life. They had experienced God’s great grace with reference to salvation and in working in their lives. Beyond their understanding of the grace of God, the second level is to be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. This was something that the Colossian Church really needed. Young people, let’s truly seek to grow in our knowledge of the Lord and His word.

Much Effort Needed To Grow In Our Knowledge Of God

Growing in knowledge requires much effort.

1. Praying Unceasingly

“Since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask”
Colossians 1:9

Paul was a man of prayer. As he heard about the faith of the Colossian Church, he sought to
specially pray that they may be filled with the knowledge of His will. This was something he asked faithfully and specifically. Our challenge is to continue to pray and to ask that the Lord will help us grow in knowledge of His will.

2. Practising God’s Word In Life And Ministry

“That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God”
Colossians 1:10

How we live for the Lord also affects our knowledge of God. When we seek to walk worthy of the Lord, to please Him and to be fruitful in our life, the Lord would reveal more of Himself to us. The increasing aspect is something that the Lord would do in our mind and heart. Let’s be challenged to walk worthy of the Lord Jesus because of who He is to us and what He has done for us. Let’s seek to fulfil the will of God and to fully please Him that we may know Him even more.
