Serving The Lord At Junior Camp 2013
There is always a sense of excitement in Church just before Junior Camp. Many Junior Camp Officers have been preparing and gearing towards the Bible lessons and interesting programmes planned for these 5 days of staying in Church. Helpers have also been rostered to do all the physical work and to help out wherever they can. It is always a joy to see the young people seeking to cultivate their spiritual gifts in serving the Lord. The challenge is to use our spiritual gifts well for Him.
Appreciating Our Spiritual Gifts
The Lord has given to each one of us special gifts.
1. Gifts Given Through Grace
“Through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you”
Romans 12:3“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us”
Romans 12:6
Spiritual gifts are given to us through the grace of God. It is by His grace that Paul became an apostle and servant of God through Christ (Romans 1:5). It is also by the grace of God that spiritual gifts have been given to us. It is according to this grace that each of us has differing gifts from one another. Let’s truly appreciate the Lord’s grace extended to us.
2. Gifts Given According To Faith
“As God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”
Romans 12:3
God has also distributed to each one a measure of faith. God gives to us the kind of faith we should have and based on our faith, the Lord will give us spiritual gifts accordingly. On the one hand, faith is something we exercise and cultivate (Romans 4). And on the other hand, faith is also something that God gives to us. It is something that He places within us.
The Manner By Which We Use Our Spiritual Gifts Well
As we consider how God is greatly involved in the giving of our spiritual gifts, let’s learn how to serve well together. The manner in which we serve is crucial. There are three ways of doing this. Firstly, we must think humbly of ourselves as we use our gifts (Romans 12:3). Our giftedness comes from God and not of ourselves. We should not be thinking too highly of what we can do. Pride is an insidious problem that lurks within us and manifests its dark side each time it has an opportunity. Let’s ensure that we do not have such a proud mindset.
Secondly, we are meant to think of oneness in all that we do and serve. The body has many members and yet, they are all connected together as one. As members of the church, we are like members of a body. We may not have the same function and roles. And yet, like the body that functions together as one, we too are to work together in unity. The person that brings all of us together is the Lord Jesus Christ. It is in Him as the head of the body of Christ that we become and continue to be one. Let’s truly seek to focus on Him.
Thirdly, let’s think about doing our part with whatever spirituals gifts we have (Romans 12:6-8). All of us have gifts that are different from each other just like the members of a body have different functions. For those with gifts of teaching and exhortation, let’s develop them. Let’s also lead the children with diligence. Let’s show mercy (especially to the naughty children) with cheerfulness. Whatever gift that we have been given, let’s use them as we should. Let’s serve the Lord well with our spiritual gifts in the right manner.
