Don’t Fret, Just Trust

As school reopens, I am sure that school work and projects are already piling up. In times like this, it is easy to start feeling stressed as the pressure mounts. Worrying could become second nature. We could start fretting and feel the need to complain. No matter how stressed up things are beginning to be, the best way to approach challenges is not to fret. The Psalmist David wrote in the text of Psalm 37 that we are not to worry.

“Do not fret”
Psalm 37:1

David challenged all to not fret even though evildoers seemed to be getting an upper hand. They should not be overly-concerned when others do evil and prosper. The phrase “Do not fret” is mentioned three times in this psalm. David emphasised this phrase because it is not an easy thing to actually cease from worrying and fretting. David challenged the people to actually get down to doing so and to start trusting the Lord.

Having Full Trust In The Lord

“Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.”

Psalm 37:3

The challenge for us as we face the challenges of life is to exercise full trust in the Lord. Trusting in God in the Old Testament can be compared to the New Testament equivalent of faith. We are meant to exercise an absolute and active trust in the Lord. When we have full trust in the Lord, it should express itself in the following ways:

1. Doing Good To Others

Even though there were those who sought to do things that were evil and wrong, David challenged all to continue to do that which was good. Even if evil seems to be prospering, we do not have to be like them. We can continue to do that which is good in God’s sight. We would seek to be righteous and do good for the benefit of all. Let’s have an active trust that would seek to do good works.

2. Staying Where We Are When The Going Gets Tough

The Psalmist also told the people to not run away from their challenges. They were to dwell in the land that they had been dwelling in. They were to stay where they were and to face whatever challenges that they had to face. There was no use running away from their problems. Whatever challenges we may face in life, let’s learn to exercise full trust in God and face them.

3. Seeking To Dwell On The Lord’s Faithfulness

God’s attribute of faithfulness is something that we can feed on. It is something that can nourish our soul with. As we remember the Lord’s faithfulness in our lives, let’s learn to dwell on it and be encouraged by it. God’s mercy and faithfulness are great sources of food for our soul. As we feed on His faithfulness, we can find the strength of faith to carry on and face the challenges of life.
