THANKING GOD FOR THE LORD’S GRACE
It is good for us to take time to reflect on the Lord Jesus and the glory of His grace as the year ends. My heart is filled with even more gratitude for Him and what He had done in our midst during this Christmas season. The Lord Jesus Himself has called many to Himself during the Youth Conference. Hearts were also deeply touched and blessed during the Christmas Carolling and concert nights. One person even spoke of how the seed of faith was already planted in his heart as he considered who the Lord Jesus is and what he had experienced at the concert. Of course, everything culminated with a significant Christmas worship service at the Shangri-La Hotel focusing on the Lord’s mercies. We thank God for the glory of His grace seen in our midst.
THE GLORY OF GOD SEEN IN THE GRACE OF THE LORD JESUS
“And we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14
The word “beheld” in Greek has the idea of one who observes and contemplates as a keen “spectator”. John and his fellow disciples had “front row seats” to seeing the Lord Jesus and the manifestation of His glory. They were able to see that He was truly a direct representation of the glory of His Father. This glory can be seen in His grace.
1. HAVING A TREMENDOUS STORE OF GRACE AND TRUTH
“Full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14
Grace and truth go together. The use of the conjunction “and” speaks of how grace must go hand in hand with truth. The giving of grace must be circumscribed by truth. Both the Lord Jesus and our heavenly Father are filled with grace and truth. There is such a great store of grace and truth from the Lord.
2. HAVING ONE LEVEL OF GRACE IN PLACE OF ANOTHER LEVEL OF GRACE
“And of His fullness, we have all received, and grace for grace.”
John 1:16
We all have received different things out of all the fullness of who the Lord is. He has been most gracious to us. The Lord has given to us one level of grace upon another level of grace. It takes the grace of the Lord to be saved. It also takes the grace of the Lord to serve Him.
3. GRACE AND TRUTH CAME THROUGH THE AGENCY OF THE LORD JESUS
“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
John 1:17
The law came about through the work of Moses. But grace and truth came through the work and example of the Lord Jesus. Our Lord was most gracious to many when He was on this earth. He was most gracious to the sinful Samaritan woman at the well (John 4). He was most gracious to the paralytic man beside the pool (John 5:1-15). The Lord Jesus is the epitome of graciousness.
RELYING EVEN MORE ON THE LORD’S AMAZING GRACE FOR 2018
Truly, we must give thanks for the grace of the Lord that has been given to us this past year. The Lord has been most gracious in calling us to Himself and in saving us. We also give thanks for His grace that enables us to live for Him and to serve Him. There is so much that we can thank the Lord with reference to His grace. We must seek to learn to rely even more on the Lord’s grace for the new year. He is indeed full of grace and truth. Let’s exercise faith even more in His abundant grace and truth for 2018.
