THINKING ONENESS IN SERVICE

Don’t Think Beyond Who We Really Are

The way we think of ourselves affects the way we work as a Church. When people start thinking beyond what they really are as servants of God, they tend to become self-assertive and it may disrupt the sense of unity in the body of Christ.

“For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think …”
Romans 12:3

Service in the Church is most effective when everyone can come together and serve with oneness. That is why the continuing challenge for all is to not think too highly of ourselves. If it is by the grace of God we have become what we are, then let’s not have a falsely perceived understanding that we are much better than others.

Think Little Of Self

“But to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”
Romans 12:3

In contrast, as we serve the Lord, we are to think soberly of self. The Lord in His great mercies has given to each one of us a certain measure of faith and is up to us to cultivate it. It is through the grace of God that we can grow in our faith. Since the measure of faith is from the Lord and through His grace, let’s learn to think of what we are and what we have in a most humble way.

Think Oneness In Diversity

“For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function …”
Romans 12:4

We, as members in the body of Christ, have differing functions. According to His grace, the Lord has given a diversity of spiritual gifts to us for the edification of the Church. Some of us may have the gift of teaching. Others may have the gift of exhortation. Still others may have the gift of giving. Whatever spiritual gifts we have been entrusted with, we are to use them. We may have different gifts and yet there must be that spirit of oneness that gels us in service. We are the body of Christ. Even as a human body with diverse members works together as one, so we as a Church must work collectively in unity, utilising well the gifts the Lord has given to us. There must be oneness in diversity

Think One Body In Christ

“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.”
Romans 12:5

Ultimately, our focus must be on our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus, His example and His word should take pre-eminence in all that we do and say. He should be lifted up in all that we embark on. We are many members but our head is Christ. We are individuals and yet brought together in the Church by our faith in the Lord Jesus. Even as we seek to serve the Lord, let’s always seek to have this oneness in Him. Let’s never allow self-pride or anything else to come between us.
