Moving Beyond Drinking “Milk”

Are you someone who is unable to understand deep spiritual truths? If you are, maybe you are struggling with a problem of spiritual immaturity. This was something that the writer of Hebrews had to deal with. Some of the Christians he was addressing could only partake of spiritual “milk” instead of “meat”.

“For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.”
Hebrews 5:13

When a person is only used to hearing “elementary” matters of Scripture, he will find it hard to go beyond. He is inexperienced in the handling of Scripture and in the discerning of it. His spiritual immaturity prevents him from discerning deeper truths. This person may also have become dull in hearing. He does not hear the word of God well and thus is unable to understand Scriptures in a deeper way. Young people, our challenge is to move beyond spiritual milk to meat.

Learning To Eat “Solid Food”

“But solid food belongs to those who are full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
Hebrews 5:14

How can we learn to go towards consuming “solid food”?

1. Seeking To Have Spiritual Maturity

As a baby needs to grow first before he can consume solid food, even so we need to grow spiritually before we can take on spiritual meat. Deep Biblical truths only belong to those who are spiritual adults. They will be able to handle the Scriptures with greater understanding. A person who is spiritually childish cannot grapple with deep truths. Young people, let’s seek to grow in our faith. May we strive towards spiritual maturity that we may be able to beyond spiritual milk to meat.

2. Training Your Spiritual Senses

The word “exercised” in the Greek is where you get the word “gymnastics”. In order to understand deeper spiritual truths, our spiritual senses must first be trained and cultivated. The more we put in the effort to train ourselves to listen to God’s word, to study it and to practise it, the more our spiritual senses will be enhanced and sharpened. The skill of knowing the Scriptures well can be learned and cultivated. When we train our spiritual senses, there will also be greater spiritual discernment. The result will be wisdom to distinguish between that which is good and evil. Let’s seek to train our spiritual senses till this discernment comes.
