(I) JOSEPH VISITS JACOB

1. Joseph was informed that Jacob was ill (Genesis 48:1a)

2. He visits Jacob with his two sons (Genesis 48:1b)

a) Manasseh

b) Ephraim

(II) JACOB BRACES HIMSELF TO SPEAK TO JOSEPH

1. He strengthened himself (Genesis 48:2a)

2. He sits up on his bed (Genesis 48:2b)

(III) JACOB SHARES HIS REFLECTION ABOUT THE PAST

1. Speaking about God Almighty

a) How He revealed Himself at Luz (Genesis 28)

Luz was in the land of Canaan (Genesis 47:3a)

b) God blessed Jacob (Genesis 47:47:3b)

c) God’s word to Jacob (Genesis 47:4)

i) I will make you fruitful

ii) I will multiply you

iii) I will make of you a multitude of people

iv) I will give this land to your descendants after you for an eternal possession

2. Speaking about the sons of Joseph

a) Ephraim and Manasseh

b) Jacob declares them his sons

c) They would be as much sons as Reuben and Simeon (Genesis 48:5)

3. Other offspring (Genesis 48:6a)

a) They will be Joseph’s

b) If Joseph had any other children

4. Right of inheritance (Genesis 48:6b)

a) They will be called by the name of their brothers

b) They will receive an inheritance as if they were the actual sons of Jacob

c) They would not be treated as mere grandsons

5. Personal life

a) Recalling Rachel’s death (Genesis 48:7a)

b) She died near Ephrath (Bethlehem). She was buried on the road to Ephrath (Genesis 48:7b)
