MISCELLANEOUS LAWS II
A) THEFT
1. If a man steals and ox or a sheep and sells it
2. He has to restore
a) 5 oxen for 1 ox
b) 4 sheep for 1 sheep Exodus 22:1
B) ROBBERY
1. Breaking and entering
2. He is struck and dies
3. No guilt for his bloodshed (if it is in the night) Exodus 22:2
4. But if he is killed in daylight
Penalty is imposed on those who killed him Exodus 22:3
5. Theft
If caught with theft he must make full restitution Exodus 22:3
If he cannot pay he may be sold as a slave Exodus 22:3
Restitution: He will pay double Exodus 22:4
C) FEEDING ON ANOTHER PERSON’S FIELD
1. Field or vineyard Exodus 21:5
a) Animal is let loose
b) The owner is liable
c) Restitution must be made
2. Fire Exodus 21:6
a) Grain is burned
b) Field is destroyed
c) Restitution must be made
3. For safe-keeping Exodus 22:7-8
a) Money or articles are given to a neighbour for safe-keeping
b) If is stolen, the thief is to pay double
c) If the thief is not found
d) The judges will decide liability
4. Claims of trespasses Exodus 22:9
a) Goods
b) Two parties claim property
c) Judges will have to decide
5. Oath-taking Exodus 22:10-15
a) In even more complex situations Exodus 22:10
b) Oath is taken before the Lord Exodus 22:11
c) In good faith… no restitution is required
d) If one is the guilty party, restitution must be made
