Text: Romans 8
Subject: “To be carnally minded is death”

INTRODUCTION

1. The problem of Sin

a) It is deadly

b) It is destructive

c) It leads to death

2. Beneath the problem of sin

a) There are underlying difficulties

b) These need to be understood and addressed

THE PROBLEM OF CARNALITY

6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Romans 8:6-8

1. Carnality comes from being in the flesh

a) The danger of being carnally minded needs to be understood

b) It is often not dealt with

c) The mind is the place where sins begin to take root

2. The Carnal Mindset

a) It is highly detrimental

b) It will lead to death

3. The Carnal Mind in the sight of God

a) It is at enmity with God

b) It is not subject to the law of God

c) The carnal Christian cannot please God

4. The works of the flesh described:

This is described in Galatians 5

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,

20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

THE SPIRITUAL-MINDED CHRISTIAN

1. The believer lives according to the Spirit

a) The Spirit dwells within the believer

b) He causes the believer to truly come alive to God

2. He is alive to the Spirit of God

a) He lives according to the Spirit

b) He follows the law of the Spirit

3. The results are wonderful to note:

a) There is life

i) Abundant life

ii) Victorious life

b) There is peace

i) A special peace given by God

ii) A peace that passes all understanding

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To deal with the problem of having a carnal mindset

2. To cultivate a godly and spiritual mindset

3. It is vital that we cultivate a strong spiritually-minded lifestyle
