Text: Romans 2:1-3

Subject: The Judgment of God IV

1 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.

3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?

Romans 2:1-3

1. The focus of this text is still on “The Judgment of God” Romans 2:2, 3

2. Paul addressed the Jewish quarter in this text

a) The Jews in those days were rather judgmental
b) They would have no problem with agreeing with what Paul had written (Romans 1:18-32)
c) In their mind, they would apply Paul’s words to Gentiles!

3. Paul had to write firmly on how God would pass Judgment

a) He would not condemn the Gentiles on the basis of their race
b) He would also not commend the Jews on the basis of their race

4. How God would Judge

a) God would judge based on “Truth”
b) God’s kind of Truth
i) Divine Truth
ii) Objective Truth
iii) Not subjective Truth

5. If a Gentile is guilty of the sins listed (Romans 1:18-32)

a) He would be judged
b) He would receive the penalty of his sins

6. If a Jew was guilty of practicing the same sins

a) He too would be judged
b) He would be found to be guilty

7. The pronouncement that may be expected

a) Inexcusable
“Therefore you are inexcusable, O man” Romans 2:1a
b) Self-condemnation
“For in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself” Romans 2:1b
“For you who judge practice the same things” Romans 2:1c

8. False hope

a) To escape the Judgment of God
b) A clear word of warning that there is no escape
“And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?” Romans 3:3
i) Judging the sinful
ii) Practising the same sins
iii) The punishment of God would be meted out!

REMEMBERING THE TEACHING OF THE LORD JESUS

1“Judge not, that you be not judged.

2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?

4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye?

5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Matthew 7:1-5

1. The problem of being judgmental

2. The added problem of hypocrisy

3. The problem of sins that have not been dealt with
