Text: Romans 14

Subject: “The kingdom of God” Romans 14:17

14 I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

15 Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.

16 Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil;

17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

18 For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

Romans 14:14-18

THE KINGDOM OF GOD

1. The focus of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) To introduce people to the Kingdom of God
b) To invite people to enter into the Kingdom of God
c) To inspire people to live and walk worthy of the kingdom of God

2. The kingdom of God in the teachings of the Kingdom of God

a) The Apostles bore the Kingdom of God in mind
b) They continued the work of the Lord Jesus instructing and inspiring people

THE DANGER OF LOSING FOCUS ON THE KINGDOM OF GOD

1. The danger of being lured into the kingdom of darkness and evil

2. The danger of being caught up with disputes and arguments

3. The dangers must be addressed

CLEAN OR UNCLEAN

1. A clear statement was needed

2. The Apostle Paul offered a clear and stirring position

a) Nothing is unclean of itself
b) But when a person is convinced something is unclean, that opinion has strong consequences

THE DANGER OF WOUNDING A WEAKER PERSON

1. The strong believer may be able to partake of every kind of food

2. But his action and attitude may cause a weaker person to stumble

3. When that happens:

a) The strong believer is not walking in love
b) The weak person may be “destroyed”
c) The “good” may now become “evil” to another person

THE CHALLENGE TO BE MINDFUL OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD

1. What is the kingdom of God to a believer?

a) It is not about “eating and drinking”
b) It is about:
i) Righteousness
ii) Peace
iii) Joy

2. It is also about serving the Lord Jesus Christ

a) Life is never about pleasing self
b) It is not about how we feel or think

3. Two aspects highlighted

a) To do things that are acceptable to God
b) To do things that are approved by men

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To have a greater awareness of the kingdom of God

2. To live more consciously for the Lord

3. To be more sensitive and gracious to those who are weaker in faith
