THE DISCIPLE PHILIP

He was from Bethsaida

This was the same city as Andrew and Peter John 1:44
a) It is more than likely that Andrew and Peter had spoken to Philip
b) Andrew was particularly zealous about sharing his faith about having found “The Christ”

THE DISCIPLE NATHANAEL

He is the good friend of Philip

Philip’s sharing about Jesus
a) We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote
b) Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph John 1:45
c) Philip must have been quite a scholar
d) He brings Nathanael to see Jesus John 1:46

Nathanael’s initial response
a) He expressed doubt
b) He could not believe anything good could come out of Nazareth John 1:46

Nathanael meets Jesus
a) Jesus greeted him with these words
Behold! An Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit John 1:47b) Nathanael was taken aback
How do You know me? John 1:48c) Jesus replied
Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. John 1:48
d) Nathanael comes to faith immediately
i) Rabbi, You are the Son of God
ii) You are the King of Israel John 1:49e) Jesus commends him
i) For believing John 1:50
ii) He will see greater things John 1:50
iii) He will see heaven open John 1:51
iv) He will see the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man John 1:51f) He is also called Bartholomew (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14)
Philip and Bartholomew were consistently linked together
