(I) UNDERSTANDING AN ASPECT OF THE CONCEPT OF THE REMNANT

“Your remnant…” Jeremiah 15:11

1. It is the Preservation of a small number of people who are faithful to the Lord

2. It is part of the Lord’s covenantal grace. (Leviticus 26:44-45)

3. It is to distinguish those who belong to the Lord and those who do not.

a. No remnant for the evil and wicked

i. The men of Anathoth (Jeremiah 11:21-23)

ii. The people of Judah (Jeremiah 15:9)

b. Remnant – Jeremiah and those who have the same faith as him.

4. It is to highlight the fact that only a few would be faithful to God

(II) THE CONTEXT OF GOD’S IMMINENT JUDGMENT

1. The sins of the people

“Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.” Jeremiah 7:24

“You have forsaken Me, “says the Lord, you have gone backward.” Jeremiah 15:6

a. Disobedience

b. Followed the dictates of their evil heart

c. Forsaken God

d. Went backwards

2. The reality of God’s judgment

“Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you; I am weary of relenting.” Jeremiah 15:6

a. The people of Israel had broken the covenant of God many times.

b. He had become weary of relenting from his judgment. – It is a useless situation.

c Reaching a point of no return (Jeremiah 15:1)

d. Utter destruction of the people envisaged (Jeremiah 15:3)

e. Despite the coming destruction, the false prophets still preached about peace (Jeremiah 8:11)

3. How much different is the world today?

a. People – the same

b) God’s coming judgment

(III) THE COMFORTING PROMISE OF BLESSING FOR THE REMNANT

“The Lord said: Surely it will be well with your remnant: Surely I will cause the enemy to intercede with you in time of adversity and in the time of affliction.” Jeremiah 15:11

1. The Promise of blessings to all who walk in God’s ways. (Jeremiah 7:23)

2. Expressions of blessings

a. Preservation of life

b. Protection of life

c. Personal Favour in the sight of the enemies

i. The enemies will talk nicely to the remnant

ii. It will be done during times of adversity and affliction

3. The Lord’s personal assurance of blessings

4. The example of how Jeremiah was blessed (Jeremiah 39)

(IV) RESPONDING TO THE PROMISE OF BLESSING ON THE REMNANT

1. Those not part of the remnant

Be part of the remnant

“Surely it will be well with your remnant:…” Jeremiah 15:11

2. Those who are part of the remnant

a. Letting the Lord confront us of our sins

“Because of all your sins…” Jeremiah 15:13

b. Dwell on the word of God

“Your word were found, and I ate them, and your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.” Jeremiah 15:16

c. Repenting and Returning to Him

“If you return, then I will bring you back; You shall stand before Me…” Jeremiah 15:19

d. Differentiate between the good and the bad

“If you take out the precious from the vile…” Jeremiah 15:19
