“THEY DID NOT ASK THE COUNSEL OF THE LORD”
(I) THE CONQUEST OF THE LAND OF CANAAN
1. The Success of the Campaigns in Canaan
a) The conquest of Jericho and Ai (Joshua 7-8)
b) Other kings conquered (Joshua 9:1)
2. Resistance of Other Kings
a) Many other kings banded together (Joshua 9:1)
b) They were going to battle Israel’s army (Joshua 9:2)
(II) THE RUSE OF THE GIBEONITES
1. They suspect that they were going to be defeated in battle by Israel
2. They determined to plot to deceive Israel (Joshua 9:2-13)
3. They succeeded in their ruse
4. They obtained a treaty with Israel (Joshua 9:15)
5. This ruse was discovered too late (Joshua 9:16)
(III) THE DANGER OF NOT CONSULTING WITH THE LORD
“They did not seek counsel of the LORD.” Joshua 9:14
1. The men of Israel (Joshua 9:7)
2. Joshua was also taken in (Joshua 9:8)
3. The rulers of the people (Joshua 9:18)
(IV) POSSIBLE RAMIFICATIONS
1. Disobedience to the Lord
2. Disapproval by the Lord
3. Disregard for God
4. Deception by the Enemy
5. Deadly consequences if these “allies” had turned against them in battle
