(I) THE CONCEPT OF THE LORD OF HOSTS
1. The Meaning of the name “The Lord of hosts”
“The LORD of hosts is His name.” Jeremiah 10:16
a) In Hebrew …. “Yahweh Sabaoth”
b) The name “LORD” is specially revered by the Jews
c) “Sabaoth” really means “hosts.”
d) The Lord of hosts is referring to the Lord of the heavenly host
2. The use of the name “The Lord of Hosts”
“The Lord of Hosts is His name.” Jeremiah 10:16
a) For encouragement
b) To bring about the fear of the Lord
(II) CONTRASTING LORDSHIP AND IDOLATRY AS A WARNING
1. The way of Lordship verses the way of the Gentiles (idolatry)
a) The tremendous worth in the Lordship of a great God ( Jeremiah 10:6, 7 )
b) The futility of the way of the Gentiles ( Jeremiah 10:2-5 )
2. The doctrine of Lordship verses the practice of idolatry
a) Lordship as a true doctrine ( Jeremiah 10:10 )
b) Idolatry is a false practice ( Jeremiah 10:8-9, 14, 15 )
3. The Lord of creation verses the gods that were created
a) The eternal power of Lord as creator ( Jeremiah 10:12, 13 )
b) The perishing of the gods of the Gentiles ( Jeremiah 10:9, 11 )
4. Conclusion…
a) To be encouraged that the Lordship of God is incomparable to all
“The Portion of Jacob is not like them, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; the Lord of Hosts is His name.” Jeremiah 10:16
b) The prohibition to go the way of the Gentiles
“Do not learn the way of the Gentiles…” Jeremiah 10:2
(III) THE LORD OF HOSTS’ CORRECTION OF THE PEOPLE
1. The Lord sought to correct the people with His pronouncement of judgment
a) Directed on all the people ( Jeremiah 10:17 )
b) The people will be thrown out ( Jeremiah 10:18 )
2. The Lord was hurt by their ways
a) The Lord needed to bear with their infirmity ( Jeremiah 10:19 )
b) The tabernacle was not set up ( Jeremiah 10:20 )
3. The shepherds of the people had led them away from the Lord (Jeremiah 10:21)
4. The result
a) The people were no longer practicing Lordship
b) Desolation ( Jeremiah 10:22 )
(IV) STANDING CORRECTED BY THE LORD OF HOSTS
“O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. O LORD, correct me, but with justice; not in Your anger, lest You bring me to nothing.” Jeremiah 10:23, 24
1. Even Jeremiah had been personally affected
2. Acknowledging the waywardness of man
a) The way of man should not be in himself
b) Man is not able to direct his own steps
3. To stand corrected by the Lord of Hosts
a) A humble spirit
b) A teachable spirit
c. A corrected spirit
4. Plead for justice and not anger
5. Re-establishing the Lordship of God
