Text: 1 Timothy 5

“I CHARGE YOU BEFORE GOD AND THE LORD JESUS”


(I) A SOLEMN CHARGE

“I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels…” 1 Timothy 5:21

1. “charge”

a) paraggelia… to command a fully authorised word (1 Timothy 1:3, 18)

b) diamarturomai… to affirm solemnly


2. Made before higher powers

a) God

b) The Lord Jesus

c) The elect angels


(II) THE PURPOSE OF THE CHARGE

“That you observe these things…” 1 Timothy 5:21

1. The use of the hina


2. The purpose is to observe these things

a) Observe… phulassó

b) Its meaning is to watch, to be on guard (military term)

c) There is the use of the Aorist active subjunctive


3. The important things that are to be guarded

a) A reference to all things that have been stated from 1 Timothy 1

b) Includes that was instructed in 1 Timothy 5

i) Exhorting each other in purity (1 Timothy 5:1, 2)

ii) Honouring the widows (1 Timothy 5:3-16)

iii) Honouring the elders who labour in the word (1 Timothy 5:17-20)


(III) THE IMPARTIALITY OF THE CHARGE

“Without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality.” 1 Timothy 5:21

1. No prejudice

a) To avoid prejudgment of people

b) Not to allow for all kinds of prejudices


2. No partiality

a) Not to take sides or to show favouritism

b) To be objective in carrying out the charge

 

(IV) PRACTICAL AND PERSONAL ENCOURAGEMENT IN FULFILLING THE CHARGE

1. To be pure

“Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.” 1 Timothy 5:22

2. To care for one’s health

“No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.” 1 Timothy 5:23

3. To discern the sins and good works of people

“Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.” 1 Timothy 5:24, 25
