Text: Isaiah 1-12

And in that day, you will say:
O LORD, I will praise You;
Though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away,
And You comfort me. Isaiah 12:1

THE ANGER OF GOD

1. Righteous anger

a) Anger that is without sin

b) Anger that is fully justified

c) Anger displayed against Israel

d) Anger also felt on a personal level (“me”)

2. The Righteous anger of God

a) Directed against sin

b) Against unrighteousness

c) Against Israel

3. Statements about the anger of God

a) A commonly expressed statement

For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is stretched out still. (Isaiah 5:25; 9:12, 17; 10:5)

b) The anger of God

i) This has not been fully understood

ii) The consequences had not fully sunk in

iii) The people were too blinded and hardened to comprehend the meaning of God’s anger

THE PROBLEMS OF ISRAEL

1. Problems on the surface observed

a) Rebellion (Isaiah 1:2)

b) Ignorance (Isaiah 1:3)

c) Laden with iniquity (Isaiah 1:4a)

d) Brood of evildoers (Isaiah 1:4b)

e) Corrupters (Isaiah 1:4c)

f) Forsaken the Lord (Isaiah 1:4d)

g) Turned away backward (Isaiah 1:4e)

2. Problems beneath the surface

a) Their tongue and doings are against the LORD (Isaiah 3:8)

b) Brazen sinfulness… they do not hide it (Isaiah 3:9)

c) No regard of the work of the LORD (Isaiah 5:12)

d) No knowledge (Isaiah 5:13)

e) Woes pronounced (Isaiah 5:19-23)

f) Rejection of the law of the Lord (Isaiah 5:24)

3. Consequences of these sins

a) Personal- Individual Life

i) The whole head is sick (Isaiah 1:5c)

ii) The whole heart faints (Isaiah 1:5d)

iii) The whole body- no soundness (Isaiah 1:6)

iv) Putrefying wounds (Isaiah 1:6)

b) National level

i) Country is desolate (Isaiah 1:7)

ii) Cities burned up with fire (Isaiah 1:7b)

iii) Strangers devour the land (Isaiah 1:7c)

iv) Besieged city (Isaiah 1:8)

4. Inadequate and useless solutions

a) Offering more sacrifices to God (Isaiah 1:11)

b) Futile sacrifices (Isaiah 1:13)

c) Rejection of prayers (Isaiah 1:15)

THE TURNING AWAY OF GOD’S ANGER

1. This is most welcome news (Isaiah 12:1)

2. This was God’s grace and mercy shown

a) Huge

b) Significant

c) Badly needed

THE COMFORT THAT GOD ALSO GIVES

This was truly outstanding! This is the lovingkindness of God! (Isaiah 12:1; 51:3)

2. But must be personally comprehended

3. Faith in God

a) To be found

b) Restoration

c) Revival
