2 Chronicles 29-32
THE REIGN OF HEZEKIAH
(13th King)
1. Began reign at 25 years of age
2. Reigned 29 years
(d. 54 years)
3. Achievements
a) In the first year of his reign, in the first month (2 Chronicles 29:3)
i) He opened the doors of the house of the LORD
ii) He repaired them
b) He instructed and instructed the Priests and Levites (2 Chronicles 29:3-11)
i) Sanctify yourselves
ii) Sanctify the house of the LORD God of your fathers
iii) Carry the rubbish from the holy place
iv) Our fathers have transgressed and done evil in the eyes
of the LORD our God
v) They have forsaken Him
vi) Have turned their faces from the dwelling place of the LORD
and turned their backs on Him
vii) They have also shut up the doors of the vestibule
viii) Put out the lamps
ix) And have not burned incense or offered burnt offerings
in the holy place to the God of Israel
x) Therefore the wrath of the LORD fell upon Judah and Jerusalem
xi) And He has given them up to trouble, to desolation,
and to jeering, as you see with your eyes
xii) Because of this our fathers have fallen by the sword;
and our sons, our daughters and our wives are in captivity
xiii) Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD God
of Israel, that His fierce wrath may turn away from us
xiv) My sons, do not be negligent now
xv) For the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him,
to serve Him, and that you should minister to Him and burn incense
c) The cleansing of the Temple was done successfully (2 Chronicles 29:12-19)
d) Returning to the Worship of the LORD (2 Chronicles 29:20-24)
i) Sin offering
ii) To make an atonement for all Israel
iii) Burnt offering too
e) Reinstatement of the Priestly/Levitical ministry
i) According to the commandment of David (2 Chronicles 29:25-26)
ii) Singing to the LORD restored (2 Chronicles 29:27)
with musical instruments
iii) The assembly worshipped (2 Chronicles 29:28)
iv) The king bowed and worshipped too (2 Chronicles 29:29)
v) Command to all the priests/ singers (2 Chronicles 29:30)
vi) Many participated in worship (2 Chronicles 29:31-33)
vii) The Levites stood out (2 Chronicles 29:34)
viii) The service of the Temple was restored (2 Chronicles 29:35)
ix) God had prepared the people (2 Chronicles 29:36)
f) Keeping of the Passover (2 Chronicles 30)
i) Invitation extended to Israel
Northern Kingdom (2 Chronicles 30:1-12)
ii) Positive response from Israel (2 Chronicles 30:13-17)
g) Failure of some Israelites to keep
the Passover properly (2 Chronicles 30:18)
h) Hezekiah as intercessor (2 Chronicles 30:18-19)
i) God heard this prayer and healed the people (2 Chronicles 30:20)
j) Extension of the keeping of the Passover (2 Chronicles 30:21-24)
k) Great encouragement to the Levites (2 Chronicles 30:22)
i) Taught the good knowledge of the LORD
ii) They ate in fellowship with all worshippers
l) Great joy in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 30:26)
Nothing like this since Solomon’s time
m) Priests and Levites fulfilled their roles (2 Chronicles 30:27)
i) Blessed the people
ii) Prayed for them
n) Further reforms (2 Chronicles 31)
i) Destroyed all forms of idolatrous practices
ii) Appointed the divisions of the priests
and Levites
iii) To serve, to give thanks, and to praise
iv) Personal giving by the king
v) Support from the people for the Priests
and Levites
vi) Great response from everyone;
Great abundance of provision
vii) Building of storerooms to keep the abundance
of gifts
4. Commendation
a) He did what was right in the sight of the LORD (2 Chronicles 29:2)
b) According to all that his father David had done (2 Chronicles 29:2)
c) He did what was good, and right and true (2 Chronicles 31:20)
d) He did it with all his heart (2 Chronicles 31:21)
e) He sought God and he prospered (2 Chronicles 31:21)
5. Threat of War by the Assyrians (2 Chronicles 32:1-23, Isaiah 36-37)
a) Sennacherib’s boastful threat
b) Belittling of Hezekiah
c) Spoke against the Lord
6. Prayer of Hezekiah and Isaiah
a) God heard their prayers
b) An angel was sent to destroy the Assyrians
c) Hezekiah exalted in the sight of all the nations
7. Sennacherib returns home defeated
He was assassinated
