THE LORD HAS SPOKEN: THE FIRST WORD (Isaiah 1:2-9)

1. Audience

a) Heaven

b) Earth (Isaiah 1:2)

2. Important questions

a) How has the LORD spoken?

b) What has the LORD said?

c) What would be the appropriate response if God has spoken?

3. The Doctrine of God speaking

a) To the World

i) God speaks through His creation (Psalm 19:1-4)

ii) The invisible attributes of God are clearly seen in Creation (Romans 1:20)

iii) Understood by the things that are made (Romans 1:20)

iv) They knew God (Romans 1:21)

v) But they did not glorify Him as God nor were thankful (Romans 1:21)

b) To the fathers

i) At various times

ii) In various ways

iii) God spoke to the fathers

iv) By the prophets (Hebrews 1:1)

c) To us

i) By His Son

ii) The appointed Heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2)

4. The Word God sought to communicate to His people “My people”- Isaiah 1:3

vi) In danger of becoming like Sodom and Gomorrah (Isaiah 1:7-8)

THE LORD HAS SPOKEN: THE SECOND WORD (Isaiah 1:10-23)

“Hear the word of the LORD” Isaiah 1:10

a) The rulers

2. Addressing the religious practices of the nation Isaiah 1:11-15

a) Sacrifices (Isaiah 1:11-12)

c) God’s assessment

i) To what purpose? (Isaiah 1:11)

THE LORD HAS SPOKEN: THE THIRD WORD (Isaiah 1:21-31)

“Therefore the LORD says, The LORD of hosts, the Mighty one of Israel” (Isaiah 1:24)

1. The original city of Jerusalem

a) Faithful city (Isaiah 1:21)

b) Full of justice (Isaiah 1:21)

c) Righteousness lodged in it (Isaiah 1:21)

2. Because of sin

a) Murderers (Isaiah 1:21)

b) Analogies:

i) Silver becoming dross

ii) Wine mixed with water

c) Princes are rebellious (Isaiah 1:23)

d) Companions of thieves (Isaiah 1:23)

e) Everyone loves bribes (Isaiah 1:22)

f) No defence of the fatherless (Isaiah 1:23)

g) No protection of the widows (Isaiah 1:23)

3. A word of warning

a) With reference to the sinful people

i) Adversaries will be gotten rid of (Isaiah 1:24)

ii) Vengeance on enemies (Isaiah 1:24)

iii) Hand of God will turn against them (Isaiah 1:25)

iv) Dross and alloy purged (Isaiah 1:25)

v) Destruction of transgressors/ sinners (Isaiah 1:28)

vi) Consumption of all who forsake God (Isaiah 1:28)

vii) Shame to all idolaters (Isaiah 1:29-31)

b) With reference to the future (after cleansing)

i) Good judges restored (Isaiah 1:26)

ii) Wise counselors as at the beginning (Isaiah 1:26)

iii) City of righteousness, the faithful city (Isaiah 1:26)

iv) Zion shall be redeemed with justice (Isaiah 1:27)

v) Her penitents with righteousness (Isaiah 1:27)

APPROPRIATE RESPONSES TO THE WORD OF GOD

1. From Isaiah

a) Hear… the Word of the LORD (Isaiah 1:2, 10)

b) Give ear… to the Law of God (Isaiah 1:2, 10)

c) Reason… (Isaiah 1:18)

2. From King David

a) More to be desired are they than gold (Psalm 19:10)

b) Moreover by them Your servant is warned (Psalm 19:11)

c) And in keeping them there is great reward (Psalm 19:11)

d) Cleanse me from secret faults (Psalm 19:12)

e) Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins (Psalm 19:13)

f) Let them not have dominion over me (Psalm 19:13)
