STUDIES IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
Text: Matthew 9:18-26

Subject: THE MINISTRY OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

18 While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.”
19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.
20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment.
21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.”
22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.
23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing,
24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him.
25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
26 And the report of this went out into all that land.

Matthew 9:18-26

TWO NOTABLE MIRACLES

1. A ruler of the synagogue approached the Lord Jesus

2. The name of the ruler was “Jairus” (Mark 5:22-43; Luke 8:41-56)

3. The Miracles are easily understood

4. But what lessons were they intended to communicate?

THE INTENDED LESSON IN THE RAISING OF JAIRUS’ DAUGHTER

1. Death

a) It is terribly feared
b) Especially when a child dies

2. Death is but sleep to the Lord

a) This was further elaborated on by the Apostle Paul
b) Ponder his teaching about Death and Sleep
13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
c) Death is no more than sleep to the Lord
d) The Soul is with the Lord Jesus when Death comes
e) Comfort may be found in this word from the Lord

THE INTENDED LESSON IN THE HEALING OF THE WOMAN WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS

1. It was a lesson on Faith

a) Many are the lessons of Faith that we must learn
b) When there is absence of Faith we suffer even more painfully

2. Expressions of Faith

a) Coming to the Lord Jesus in faith
b) Reaching out a hand of faith
c) Assurance that faith in the Lord is not in vain

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To understand how we may overcome our fear of Death

a) Through knowledge of the Scriptures
b) Through Faith in the Lord Jesus
c) Through exercising that Faith

2. To understand why we need to develop faith

a) To overcome the chronic problems of life
b) To seek the Lord Jesus
c) To find help from Him in times of need
