STUDIES IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
Text: Matthew 22:23-33

Topic: “God of the living”

23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,
24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother.
26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh.
27 Last of all the woman died also.
28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.
31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching

Matthew 22:23-33

INTRODUCTION

1. The Sadducees

a) It was a religious faction

b) They were the opponents of the Pharisees

2. What they believed in

a) Only the first 5 books of Moses

b) They declare faith in God

3. What they did not believe in

a) They reject the Prophets and the Writings

b) They also did not believe in the Resurrection

A FOOLISH STORY

1. A woman who had seven husbands

2. All of the men were brothers

3. In the resurrection

Whose wife would she be?

4. They did not think that the Lord would have an answer to this story they made up

THE ANSWER OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. The Lord exposed their ignorance

a) They did not know the Scriptures

b) They do not know the power of God

c) Thus, they are mistaken

2. Life in Heaven

a) There will be a new order of things

b) People do not marry in heaven

c) Believers are like angels of God in heaven

3. The Resurrection of the dead

a) God’s declaration

31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?

Matthew 22:31-32a

i) God spoke to Moses

ii) He identified Himself to Moses Exodus 3:6

b) “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” Matthew 22:32b

i) God spoke of the patriarchs as being alive

ii) God is not the God of the dead

iii) He is the God of the living

RESPONSE OF THE MULTITUDE

And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching

Matthew 22:33

1. The Multitudes

a) Sadducees

b) Pharisees

c) General members of the public

2. The answer given by the Lord

a) It was an astonishing answer

b) It was a brilliant reply

3. The Sadducees

They had no response!

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To know the Scriptures better

2. To have a greater relationship with the God of the living

3. To treasure our faith for what it is

a) Sound

b) Solid

c) Strong

4. To admire the Lord Jesus

a) Teacher

b) Defender

c) Saviour and Lord
