Text: Matthew 23

37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
38 See! Your house is left to you desolate;
39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

Matthew 24:37-39

HISTORY OF JERUSALEM

1. Jebus to Jerusalem

a) Jebus was the old name
b) It was captured by David
c) It was then called the city of David 2 Samuel 5
d) The ark of God was brought into Jerusalem 2 Samuel 6

2. Solomon built the Temple of Jerusalem

a) It was dedicated to the LORD
b) God consecrated the Temple and blessed it
c) Jerusalem was the place that God had chosen 2 Chronicles 7

A WORD OF WARNING GIVEN TO SOLOMON

1. If Israel was to become idolatrous

2. God would cast Israel out of His sight

3. The Temple would be destroyed too 1 Kings 9:6-9

 

THE DARK SIDE OF JERUSALEM

1. Israel and Judah fell into idolatry 2 Kings 17

2. They were guilty of many wicked deeds

3. Consequently

a) Israel was destroyed by the Assyrians
b) Judah wad destroyed by the Babylonians

JERUSALEM WAS RESTORED

1. By King Cyrus

2. He was commanded by God to help Israel return to their native land (Isaiah 44-45)

3. But Jerusalem never overcame the problem of sin

JERUSALEM IN THE DAYS OF THE LORD JESUS

1. Jerusalem’s treatment of God’s servants

a) It killed them
b) It stoned them

2. The Lord wanted to gather them

a) As a mother hen would gather her chicks
b) But Jerusalem would not respond
THE LORD’S MINISTRY IN JERUSALEM

1. He taught

2. He healed

3. But He was resisted and harassed

4. He would soon end His public ministry there

5. Jerusalem would see Him no more

6. But they would see Him on His Triumphal ride to Jerusalem

7. There would be some who would greet Him

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

VITAL LESSONS

1. Jerusalem was chosen and yet finally set aside

2. Vital lessons to be learned

a) To heed the Lord
b) To walk in righteousness
c) To serve the Lord faithfully
